      1967 GTO Restmod Project

      Well heres my project. I sold my Nova and its time for me to begin my "new/old" project car. My 1967 GTO. Heres the rundown. Its a factory California car and absolutly rot free. Its very straight and basically the bodywork and paint is done. It was a factory 360hp H.O. auto car from the factory. It came with AC, PS,PB,PA, turbo 400 with a his/hers shifter and 3.36 gears. The car is in fantastic shape.

      Its got setimental value for me. Dad and I started the car as a father son project. I drove it in highschool for a while and it spun a bearing so its sat for the last 10 years. When we built it the first time, it was done as cheap as possible just to get it running and driving. Dad and I did the best we could with it but times were tough and money was tight. Several years later I wanted to buld a racecar. Dad and I fought over it and he told me hed be gone to hell before i cut his original GTO up. So thats where the Nova came in. I had my fun with the Nova but it was a racecar at heart. I am now settled down and want a cruiser. Dad and I cut a deal about a year ago that if I wanted to build that GTO, I could, on one condition....i couldn't cut it up and anything that was done as a mod would have to be easily put back to original. I agreed so here we are. The start of a process. It might take a while, but in the end it will be worth it. The basic plans are to...

      -Build a street friendly modern steering and suspension
      -Richmond 5 speed
      -428ci engine {it was the dealer installed factory cool motor for that year}
      -4 wheel discs
      -Bone stock interior and exterior with the exception of front seatss
      -17 or 18" wheels

      Nothing too radical, just a nice old GTO that i can drive anywhere

      Heres a few pics of the car before I get to building.

      Hey man, great to see another 67 GTO pro touring car being built! Let me give a few suggestions.

      Is that a dealer installed 428, like a warranty engine? If so you really need to set that aside, because that is just like a original$$$$$ engine. Get yourself a late sixties early seventys 400 block and put a 4" crank in it and whalah, a cheaper and better 428. Or for the same money you could have a 461 with a 4.25 crank, and if you really want to push it, you can have a 488 with a 4.5" crank.

      275 tires will be pretty much the max you can tuck in the rear. I have 295s on mine but I had to get the backspacing perfect and had to trim the wheelwell lips and massage the outer wheelhouses with a BFH. 245s will go on the front fine and I have heard that you can go bigger but mine seem pretty close.

      Well I forgot that I started a project thread over here. Anyhow the direction is still similar and I have a lot of pic updates. I got it on the road last spring and drove the SOB everywhere. I mean everywhere. Weddings, work, the grocery store, family events etc. That was step #1. I cannot stand looking at something that doesn't drive. This is a long process for me. I'm a man of middle class means, a modest garage and a wife and kid to take care of before I get to wrench. Well anyhow here goes....

      Then I bought an aluminum radiator from a guy on EBAY called entropytech. Its ok. I'm not overly impressed but the price was ok and the car didn't get hot all last summer like most pontiacs do so its not too bad. Although I think i have a leak somewhere now. Ill address it this spring.

      Since my #1 goal was to have a driver and i didnt have the $$ to get this thing rolling on a great chassis this year, i decided to take the rear CA's out, blast them, install new bushings and box them. This will all be replaced later by an SC&C stage II setup but it worked well enough this year....

      I picked up some coated hooker super comps off ebay for my traditional D port poncho. T then mated them to a 3" X pipe, with 3" dynomax ultraflos, coned from 3" to 2.5" tailpipes and exiting behind the wheels....

      I picked up a craigslist .030 over 73' 455 with 6X4 heads, a performer, a 750 Q jet, all the accessory drives, starter and all for $800 bucks. What a score. Its not super fast. I would guess it at 375 hp and maybe 425 ftlbs, but it runs GREAT....

      I needed a PS box so I scored a nice Jeep unit from a junk years, got the Lee fittings, cleaned it up and installed it. What a great upgrade for 75 bucks. 12:1 steering for a fraction of the cost!
