      Just curious, mid-engine frame design?

That tube frame thing in Hot Rod got my wheels turning.... Started thinking about how to build a frame with an SBC mounted in the middle and a Porche G50 transaxle (like an Ulitma GTR) but with all wheel drive. Anybody got any ideas? Could be any combo of parts. But the important part is mid mount V-8 and AWD. Let me hear some thoughts....Jason

      Jason,
I added a little more to your thread title. This will help you get more answers and make it come up if searched.

Take a look at this list of mfr's. http://www.kitcarlist.com/

Mr. David how about full tube chassis vehicles such as the Arial Atom, something along those lines. Especially where you can buy plans and maybe basic kits?

I haven't kept up with kit cars. I'd rather build from a proven chassis than build one from scratch, the design of a chassis can take a LOT of time to do.
I plan on building a Lola T-70 coupe some day.

The AWD Audi transaxles have the output for the front diff but it would be all the way at the rear of the car. You could adapt a "transfer case" to run the shaft forward. Kennedy has the adapter for SBCs.

That's kinda what I was thinking. But with AWD.
Paul- Thanks for the idea of the Audi piece. I looked at those on ebay. 400 bucks. Maybe I should think normal front engine with that unit. Since it's the trans and t-case in one, it could still be a really short, fun wheelbase. I think I need to look into what it takes to get a custom built car registered and insured...... Oh, the wheels are turning.I have always dug the ariel atom and that hot rod car with two sbc's just kicks butt. Talk about an automobile in it's most simple form....

The Atom is a nice theory and a nice product.

But I think they also found a way to take a simple concept and make it about as over-developed as humanly possible. Those things cost like the price of a new Corvette or something. I can't imagine paying so much money for the sum of the mechanical parts involved.

It seems like you could get 85% of the gains of that whole idea by buying a used Cobra kit car and throwing away the body entirely.

Or taking a sawzall to a raggedy old Miata or Fiero.
