E85 + Boost + "High" Compression?
Does anyone here have any experience boosting a relatively high compression engine and avoiding detonation by running it on e85? I know wheel to wheel did it on an LS2 in the Hot Rod E85 article at the beginning aof this year but I'd like to hear directly from someone who has done it.
The engine is an LT1 in my 96 Roadmaster Wagon. I have an old (but freshly rebuilt) Paxton sn2000 blower that should be good for about 8 pounds on a 350. My original plan was to build a forged low compression shortblock and leave the blower off until then. On a whim I checked E85 availability and it turns out there are 2 stations near me that sell it. I am wondering if I can run stock 10.1:1 compression combined with the boost if I tune the car to run on e85? I figure if I ever have to take a roadtrip to a place where it is unavailable I can take the blower belt off and run on premium. Do you think the stock hypereutectic pistons will live for a while? I fully expect to build a motor for it at some point but I can't afford it now and the blower is just sitting on my bench looking at me. I would rebuild a set of aluminum Lt1 heads with new springs, retainers, seals, and rockers. It will also get an appropriate cam.
On a related note are the rumors about e85 and aluminum overblown? What would I run for fuel rails? Stockers are cheap and readily available. Do you think I could just replace them periodically?

No firsthand experience on running it, but Im planning on it too. I think regular fuel rails and components will be fine. They say one of the big things is too not let the fuel sit in the tank for a long time due to the moisture absorbtion.

Are you planning on running forged or hypereutectic pistons?

check out steve morris' web site he has built several sbc with 10.1 comp and ran a f1r on these motors. also if im not mistaken e85 is around 105 octane you just need to keep in mind it burns about 20 percent more.

Anyone else have input? The E85 guys seem confident it will work but most of them are playing with Subarus and Audis that were boosted from the factory.
