BTW $10 worth of ratchet straps around the tire and through the cribbing would ease my mind about it rolling off.
I use a long 5 ton truck jack and I do use the ratcheting straps over what ever set of wheels I put on the top of my current ramps.

My jack looks like this but this is not it. Depending on how high I goes I some times do it in stages.

These are the ones I built. I got the idea from a "Build Book" for the Sick Fish Cuda, but I made them a little larger. They're about 19x12x10 high. I used 2x3's-they're lass then $2 each, and I put a 3/4" plate on the top of each one so I could put a jackstand,or whatever on top of them. This came in handy when I was putting my Nova on the chassis jig,I actually lifted the car and assembled the jig under it.

Bringing this back up for a minute.

I made mine 18" tall in 2 sections. You think its strong enough for the height..

The lifting part scerd me buuuuut works fine. 12" up which is plenty of room for me to crawl under and maneuver easily. I made them 14"x12".

Lowbuck, just a recommendation, but you need to move your tire tie-down straps. Loop them through the highest (closest to tire) cross section that you can. Having them so far down, as you do, is going to leave some horizontal slack, no matter how tight you get them, which can allow the tire to roll still.

I know this is an old post, but for anyone who may make them, pressure treated lumber can and does get brittle and split. Ever look at a dock after a few months? Yup, its got cracks and splitting at the grain. Granted, it would probably never be enough to fail completely, but I'd rather not risk it.

Post #46. LowBuck came up with the idea to use tie-down straps to secure the tire to the stands.

Okay, so we all like / love these things. and the size seems to be around 12 x 12 or 12 x 14.

Just curisous why not put a high density sheet of 3/4 plywood on the very bottom and make it 18 x 18. It could add a little more stability.

and last thing - when ever i am under a car / truck I always put a tire or a block of wood ( taller them my skull / ribcage ) just in case my jack stands fail. It's one extra step and it's worth it's weight in gold.

Another option I have is a stack of 2 x 12's -- 24" long screwed together with a total height of 12". It's small enough that I can move it around and it's an extra security blanket.

It's been a little over a year but I lost a friend because his truck fell on him. So ever since them I am extra careful. I don't want my wife or kids to ever find me crushed under one my cars.

Larry, that would be great but shipping would kill the deal. Wood and screws would put total shipping weight at about 55#'s!!!

I am off to Home Depot to buy the materials, 10 - 2X4's , a box of 2 1/2" decking screws, and a tube of Liquid Nails.

Lots of good input in this thread!!
