Holley Fuel Inlet Fitting Question - Pic

I was runnning the brass holley inlet fittings and want to change them out to the blue anodized fitting as shown in the picture below.

Upon removal of the brass fitting I noticed there is a copper looking piece with a spring in the hole. When I try to use the copper looking piece with the spring and the blue anodized fitting, the blue fitting doesn't screw in all the way and basically the copper fitting is jammed up inside the hole, thus making the piece and spring useless.

Do I need this copper piece with the spring?

That is a sintered bronze fuel filter and the spring used to hold the filter against the seat in the nut. There should also be a sealing washer that seals the nut to the float bowl.

If the filter and spring, when installed correctly, do not fit into the new fitting then it is not intended to be used. Another external filter will need to be used.

However, having a filter immediately before the bowl helps keep any junk out of the carburetor.

The sintered filter hurts performance and they do not filter well.

Best to put a paper inline filter right before the carb with a 5 to 10 micron element.

First job with a Holley is to junk that bronze filter and fit a quality paper one pre pump.
