      Looking for paint gun!

As the title says looking for a paint gun. Since I am new to painting I will be just starting with primer and sealers. Hopefully after some experience I will be able to at least be able to spray color on firewalls doorjambs and the like. I recently purchased a new compressor and am now looking for a paint gun and some other accesories. The things I need to know are Siphon or gravity feed, tips sizes, vendors, and prices. I don't want to break the bank but I don't want to short myself either. Also any filtering tips for keeping water and oil out of my paint would be appreciated also. Once I get the equipment identified and bought I will check back on painting techniques. Thanks,

      Bruce

I have two Anest Iwata LPH-400's. One for Base, One for CLear. I've used almost every gun on the market and used Sata guns exclusively--until I tried the Iwata. I liked the Iwata so much that my $400 Sata-Jet 2000 became a primer gun! The Iwata and the Sata are pricey, though. If you want a good, inexpensive gun- I have to recommend the DeVilbiss Finishline. You should be able to find it online for around $100. It's an all metal gun, a little heavy-but it sprays very well. I still use mine from time to time. Sharpe has recently come out with a new line of well-performing, inexpensive guns- but I haven't tried them. Good luck.......

I good learner/primer gun is the HVLP gun sold by Harbor Freight. I have one that I use just for primer. I also have a Binks M1G for base and clear coats and a Sata Detail gun. I agree that the Sata is great but expensive. I used the Harbor Freight gun for years painting enamal and single stage urethane's but got the Binks for base/clear systems. The main thing is practice as much as you can.

blaster, if you don't mind changing tips when you go from primer, to base, to clear - it's probably an okay deal. The tips are about $25 separately and with all of the tips included the price is about right.

trilogy, the Z looks sweet...very smooth finish... :icon996:

      Devilbiss Finishline

I bought that same gun you're looking at from spraygundepot and it works great. no complaints at all. Spraygundepot has been a good shop to do business with as well.

the harbor freight gun is very good to learn with, ive used it for primer and even used it to blend in a 1/4 panel in red (not the easiest thing) on a 91 camaro that was a dialy dirver. just ruined it shooting epoxy though. i liked so much i bought another. have two sharp cobalt guns for base and clear that im very happy with. i think you should have seperate guns for primer and paint. anyone have specific tip size recommendations for paint and clear???

I have never heard anyone actually like those Cobalt guns. They were notorious for spray issues when they came out. I actually bought a primer version and when I ran into problems I called Sharpe and they were so aware of problems that they just sent me another gun no questions asked. Astro is a cheap Sata knock off that works great on low air supply. They clean up fairly easy. Do not go crazy with 1st gun. Watch air consumption numbers and most of the better guns use up more than you will be able to deliver with home compressor. Plus with the $99 gun when it is giving you problems you simply toss it and get another. That Astro with a 1.8 will handle most surfacers with no problems. It actually outperforms MY Sata KL primer gun. Why?? who knows and I am to busy to figure it out. Unless you are into production work stick with the import stuff. Brian

I bought a sharpe finex primer/surfacer gun for around $75 and was very impressed with it. Works great for primers with the 1.7 fluid tip. Very easy to clean and I like the aluminum screw on cap compared to my devilbiss gti clearcoat gun with disposable lids. Since I only paid 75 for it I was going to buy a new primer gun for each car I do but it still looks brand new after countless hours loading primer on the 53' eldorado that I'm finishing up. Great buy for the money. It has two features that I must have in a primer gun.
      1. ability to spray thick materials
      2. Ease of cleaning

I use a new DeVilbiss and love it! (I have 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 tips)
My last gun was a Finishline and I ended up tossing it after two jobs. It was an older model that had replacement plastic tips. A total waste and mess.

I've spent more time during painting trying to fix or set-up a crappy gun than painting. My suggestion is to not skimp on a good gun. The better the gun, the less work you have to do after you shoot. Just my 2 cents.
