front tire size for 1965 gto

I have figured out that my rear tire is going to be a 255/45/18 . I'm trying to figure out my front wheel now. I know that I want it to be a 17 inch wheel. I would like it to be an 8 inch wheel if that is possible. I'm going to lower the front about an inch . Can I run a 235 or 245/40/18 on the front with no rubbing and if so, what would the backspace have to be ?

Yes you can run a 235 easy and a 245 if backspacing is correct. On an 8" wheel, you're going to need between 4.5" and 4.75" of backspacing up front, depending on your brakes.

Here's a good article on the subject: http://www.oldsmobility.com/fitting-wheels.htm

I run 18x8 4.75" BS rims with 245/40 fronts and 255/45s in the rear on my 65 Goat. No issues.

      66 Gto

Can we see some pics I got a 66 gto not sure if it would be the same set up, but I was thinking about running 19x8.5 all around with 225 40 19 - would this tire size be too small or should I go 235 or 245 ...

66/67 A-bodies have larger wheel wells so you can stuff a bit more rubber under the car. I'll see if I can dig up some pics to post.

Check the sticky note with fitments to see what has been done for 66-67 tire sizes.

      65 GTO Rim size

      Hi,
I have a stock 65 and plan to upgrade to 17's. Does anyone know the max size rim width, tire and backspacing is possable? Plan to have the rims made to my specified backspacing. Thanks!!!

Max rim width without major mods is 8" up front ant 9.5" out back. Max tire would be a 245 up front and a 275 in back. The 275s will be very tight w/out a minitub. Front backspacing would be between 4.75" and 5.25" depending on your brakes. Just for reference, my front wheel is only .25" from the swaybar with 4.75" backspacing.

To get a 9.5" in back on a 275, you'll be right around 5.75", but you'll need to do plenty of measuring to be sure.

Thanks Matt, great summary, this should be a good basline for me. Once I finish my TKO installation, will set her on the ground for the final measurements then order the rims.

Anyone know if a 17 x 8.5 will fit a 66? I am looking at new rims for my TA and want to see if my old rims will fit my son's 66.

I would fit them on the car, but it is 3 hours away at my dad's place.

It's been a while since I have been on here but my wheels are on. I bought 18 by 9 or 9.5 with 275/40/18's for the back and 17 by 8 with 245/45/17 in the front. I put a narrowed moser in the back so I got the smallest backspacing i could on the rear. I think it is 3.75. The front backspacing is 5 inches. I have no rubbing in the front and by some miracle, I ordered the correct width rearend and the rears fit with about a half inch of clearance on both sides. I think if I rolled the wheel wells I could fit a 285 or 295 because the fender lip is about an inch wide. I am going to try to post pics but I have never done it before so bear with me.

I'm running a 19/20 Rushforth combo on my 1967 Pontiac Tempest. They are 19x8 with a 4 7/8" backspace and 20x10's with a 6.25" backspace. Front tires are 245/35/19, and rears are 285/30/20. Here are a some pics.

Friend of mine is looking to upgrade, what size and bs on the rear?

And for my knowledge what rims are those? They almost look like Pontiac Rally IIs.

Did anyone ever find out the rear rim and tire size on Nothern Goat’s car? I sent him a message but have not heard back. Thanks
