Bought a 28 YO car from Ontario when I lived in MI in 2009. Trailered it back across the border. At customs there was a quick check that I didn't need emissions or DOT on a car that age, then they passed me thru w/o import duty (the sales price was $1K.) Michigan Secretary of State didn't even blink when I changed title and registered it. It was a non-event.

I will caution you that states like CA and OR (and I'm certain others) will require an Federal emissions pass for 76 and later and 75 and later respectively

I went the other way US (Louisiana to Ontario) for my ‘69 Bird. The biggest issue was having the paperwork.

US side: make certain the border crossing has agents that process vehicles. I crossed in Sarnia and had to transit Blue Water bridge border during a weekday, normal business hours.

US wanted a bill of sale, the title, and indicator car was legal to drive on North American highways, roads. I didn’t have a blue sticker (GM did not start putting them on until 1970), and I needed paperwork from GM Canada (re: conformance to all laws for public hiways, applicable in 1969).

Canada just wanted the taxes, and they were closely reviewing the bill of sale. Didn’t have to deal with licensing/taxes until car ownership switched in Ontario.

This site helped me out. https://www.riv.ca/

US side, just reviewed US Customs & Border https://help.cbp.gov/s/article/Artic...language=en_US

      It is definitely an experience!

      Best of luck.
