11-10-2022 #62It is fun to finally have a major piece of the project in to work on. I’ll finish up the welding on the back half this week. I need to build some bumper brackets that mount off the rear frame rails that will serve to locate the sheet metal on the back end. All that rusty old metal goes away but I have to make sure I know where the new stuff connects.
I am thinking I won’t get the entire fastback conversion kit but just use the critical pieces. The A pillar and B pillars are good and so are the rockers. That leaves the quarters, roof, and trunk area. Since I will have a full frame and roll cage, these won’t be structural members of the assembly and I can mostly just use the exterior pieces. I can add necessary attachment points to hold it all together. I’ll have to make sure the rear window and trunk lid are strong. I don’t want any movement there.
11-11-2022 #63The back half is fully welded now. Just need to finish the bumper brackets and then I’m on to smoothing out the firewall. I need to place my roll cage order too. I think I’m going with Art Morrison for that. My welds are getting better as we go along.
11-13-2022 #64Bumper brackets are done. I’ll have to do the final welding once the old sheet metal is removed.
I spent a little time cleaning up the firewall a bit.
11-13-2022 #65It’s coming together pretty good and starting to look like what I want. The next phase is cutting away pretty much all of the existing sheetmetal. The original car was mostly just a serial number and a template. It lets me know where to mount all the new stuff. I thought the roll bar was next but I really need the roof in place before I can cut the roll bar so I need to put that stuff in place next.
11-18-2022 #66I love it when the freight truck show up.
11-18-2022 #67I just need to figure out where all these tubes go. I can fit these up and get close but I can’t weld anything until I have the fastback roofline set.

Start with a car and cut away everything but the VIN plate. That's bold...I like it!
Cars are meant to be driven.

11-20-2022 #70A little progress
I spent some time smoothing out some more of the firewall today. I’ll probably stop there since you really won’t be able to see it once the engine is in.
I started removing the sheet metal. Didn’t get too far. Drilling out those spot weld sure is time consuming.
I got in some practice welding tubes for the upcoming roll cage installation.
