Thank you. I am learning a lot as I go along and it’s fun to share what I did. I have gained so much reading through other builds and I figure somebody could learn something they want to do or not do from my experience.

It is fun to finally have a major piece of the project in to work on. I’ll finish up the welding on the back half this week. I need to build some bumper brackets that mount off the rear frame rails that will serve to locate the sheet metal on the back end. All that rusty old metal goes away but I have to make sure I know where the new stuff connects.

I am thinking I won’t get the entire fastback conversion kit but just use the critical pieces. The A pillar and B pillars are good and so are the rockers. That leaves the quarters, roof, and trunk area. Since I will have a full frame and roll cage, these won’t be structural members of the assembly and I can mostly just use the exterior pieces. I can add necessary attachment points to hold it all together. I’ll have to make sure the rear window and trunk lid are strong. I don’t want any movement there.

The back half is fully welded now. Just need to finish the bumper brackets and then I’m on to smoothing out the firewall. I need to place my roll cage order too. I think I’m going with Art Morrison for that. My welds are getting better as we go along.

Bumper brackets are done. I’ll have to do the final welding once the old sheet metal is removed.

It’s coming together pretty good and starting to look like what I want. The next phase is cutting away pretty much all of the existing sheetmetal. The original car was mostly just a serial number and a template. It lets me know where to mount all the new stuff. I thought the roll bar was next but I really need the roof in place before I can cut the roll bar so I need to put that stuff in place next.

I just need to figure out where all these tubes go. I can fit these up and get close but I can’t weld anything until I have the fastback roofline set. Name: 8BDF2F5C-2BCC-4808-9650-5E8BDFB76945.jpg

Start with a car and cut away everything but the VIN plate. That's bold...I like it!

Yeah, not exactly the original plan but I’m committed now. Speaking of VIN, can I just cut that out of the original fender and rivet it to the new fender or do I have to weld it in?

      A little progress

I spent some time smoothing out some more of the firewall today. I’ll probably stop there since you really won’t be able to see it once the engine is in.

I started removing the sheet metal. Didn’t get too far. Drilling out those spot weld sure is time consuming.

I got in some practice welding tubes for the upcoming roll cage installation.

      Nice progress!

You need to be careful about removing your VIN tag and re-installing it. At least don't post details on an open forum until you understand what the potential implications are. A quick Google search should give you details on federal and state law. I mess with early Broncos and know the ins and outs of these with respect to the VIN (official VIN is on the frame; glovebox door has the warranty tag), but pretty sure Mustangs are different.

Good point. I’ll do some research.

Looks great, awesome build. Myself I'd crank up the heat a bit on the welder.
      My half a$$ed build thread.https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/...elle-6-0-4L60E

Tighten it till it strips & back it off a quarter turn.

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot. Those tubes are plenty thick and it cold in the shop these days.

      Wrong cage

I discovered why I was having so much trouble fitting the cage into the car- I ordered the wrong cage. I had a 94 Mustang cage which is significantly smaller than the first gen and wasn’t working at all. So, I packed it up and shipped it back in hopes of getting the right one this time.

In the meantime, I decided to preview the tire size I intend to use so I cut out some plywood circles and “mounted” them to take a look. They don’t fit and I can’t set it on the ground until I cut away the rest of the trunk supports and wheel wells.

Thank you. Progress has been a little slow lately. I ordered the wrong roll bar and am waiting for the replacement. Also waiting on new fastback parts to make the conversion.

I built and tacked in the seat supports and then made some cardboard floors. Mocked up a concept for the rear in place of backseats.

I had to shorten the panhard bar to make it work with the sway bar I want to use.

I plan to use some of the internal structure to support the new fastback skin. It was surprising to see that none of the internal pieces were protected at all. No paint whatsoever. Name: 6C747E43-66AC-48CD-8FA0-708EAAD85417.jpg
