chevy 400 sbc 2 bolt main?

I have a short block 400 sbc that is sitting in my garage for 17 years. The bottom end is nothing special. Has pink rods dished pistons was balanced. The block has surface rust. Looks like a stone can clean it up with no problems. Is it worth building. looking for 500hp on motor. The car a 87 monte carlo ss aerocoupe , 355 sbc trans tremic tkx 5 speed 12 bolt rear with 4:10 gear. Thanks Rob

We used to build 600 and 700 HP engines for sprint cars from those. Preferred the 2 bolt mains because splayed bolt aftermarket caps were way stronger than the GM 4 bolts.

I would build it. Arp studs along with an align hone and a good rotating assembly and you'll have some fun.

Heck yeah, that's an awesome base to build on, maybe a stroker 427?

Nothing wrong with SBC. Most people on this type of forum/community would prefer an LS or LT engine. I’m of the belief that you can do just as well with a traditional V8. Just takes a bit more reconfiguring to get the old engine to today’s standards.

I'm having a hard time convincing my friend to help me build this. He wants to build a sbc 357 that will rev to the moon. He feels its junk. I'm going to bring it to his shop and pull the bottom half out and see.

Compromise. Put in a 327 crank (and a stock bore) for 348 and it should spin faster than the 357- I'd venture to say it might make more power also.

I thought about that also. Would make a screamer.

I'd take to someone willing to build what you want. 400s produce great low end torque and will have better street manners than a smaller displacement at similar horsepower levels
