The container shortage discussed in the article is a world wide problem. Unless you are an 8000 pound gorilla like Amazon, Home Depot or Wal-Mart you have a poor chance of getting the containers you need to move your products. I find it astonishing that companies the size of Hankook are unable to obtain containers or even reserve space on a container ship headed overseas for their products.
You may have noticed the US trade deficit has been in the news lately. One of the contributing factors is the gorillas will not allow empty containers to be delayed so they can be loaded with US products for delivery overseas then unloaded and then delivered to be loaded with US bound cargo. This demand for empty containers in Asia is also affecting the ability of US companies to ship products inside of the US. Currently it is more profitable for shipping companies to ship empty containers back to Asia than to wait for a container to be loaded with products from the US..
One current example of product shortages is for reproduction interior pieces. These days most vinyl and fabrics are manufactured in Mexico. Those factory's currently are idled due to shortages of dyes and other chemicals. The one major US factory for foam rubber is shut down as one of the chemical ingredients to make foam rubber is not manufactured in the US and has not been arriving from overseas. These kinds of product shortages have stopped hundreds of industries across the US and the around the world.

It doesn't look like things are going to get better any time soon. I just hope this isn't the death bell for any of our suppliers.
