      Pro-Touring.com Garage / Studio

Recently my wife and I moved. She has all the land she needs for animals and I have a new garage.

The house was built in 1963 and the semi-detached garage has been modified and had lots of junk added to it over the last nearly 60 years.

When we moved in there were 17 light switches in the garage and even more outlets.

The plan is to gut the garage and see what we have to work with. If it goes as I hope we will be able to add some new beams and remove some to allow room for a lift.

      Here we go!

Still have it. It's at JCG and should return home later this year.

It's amazing how quickly things come apart.

If only it would go back together as quickly.

With the drywall removed I can see that there is a nice amount of storage space above the breezeway.

To help get around in the attic we added some plywood. This will help with cleaning up the wires and deal with some plumbing. I plan to put a sink in the garage and now a water heater in the attic.

All of the drywall has been removed, one of the support beams has been installed and the electrical has begun.

It's starting to look like there is room for a lift!

Nearly all of the old excess beams have been removed and the new ones are up.

Now I can measure to 100% confirm if there is room for the lift that I want.

      Fingers crossed!

Congrats on the new place. Looks like a cool shop in the works!

The hot rodder in me wants to cover those wires in black loom and route them out of view lol

Now that the gutting is complete it's time to measure for a lift. At first I was using floor cleaners to simulate posts then I switched to 2x4's.

The black line that I am pointing to is the height of the tall BendPak lift that I want.

It's going to be VERY close

Something that I have always wanted in my garage was a good size sink. I looked around and everything was stupid expensive, too small or what I ended up with a bit on the big side.

I wanted something that I could clean most anything in and I got that plus some. Really the only drawback to it's size is the floor space that it takes up.

It's official! I can fit the BendPak lift that I have wanted for some time.

      It's the Extra tall 10,000lb BendPak XPR-10AXLS

I am 6'3" and hate bending over when working under a car on a lift. I'm also too fat and old to be crawling around on the floor under them.

BendPak is local to me and I was SUPER lucky. I was able to get someone to swing by and help me measure the garage and help me decide how far to install it from the front of the garage.

I am installing it as close as I can to the wall with the attic door. The plan is to leave as much room as possible on the other side. It looks like in a pinch I could squeeze another car between the lift and the other wall.
I would have to raise the car on the lift all the way up and then go in on an angle. I might have to use a floor jack to finish the turn but it looks to be possible. I don't intended to do it but if I had to I could.

Phew!!! Not knowing if I could squeeze it in or not took some time to figure out.

I have an iPhone with the LiDAR option and the Polycam LiDAR app for scanning objects and rooms.

I scanned every vehicle we own and the entire garage once it was gutted. I imported the horrible STL files into a cad program and scaled all of them to the correct size.

The scans are really crude and not super accurate but they are close enough for what I need.

Below are various views including top, side and views from the outside.

In the end I don't think I can get my crew cab truck over my head due to the sink but I can defiantly get it up high enough to stand next to it and do brakes and suspension work.

It's time to get busy with the insulation.

The garage is not shaded and gets full sun all day. It doesn't get that cold here but it does get hot. My last garage was not insulated and it really sucked working in it at times. Since I am able to start from scratch I am insulating all walls and the ceiling.

The wall with the attic door is 5/8" thick drywall and the door is a solid core fire rated door. We plan to just buy a complete fire door and frame and to shorten it.

Eventually I will deal with the door but not today.

Did you create the mesh by scanning your garage/studio?

I did. The iPhone was able to do it well enough for what I needed.

      Drywall time.

Since I was going with 5/8" drywall on the house / attic side of the garage I went with 5/8" all around for a very slightly more thermal and sound insulation.

Since none of the walls are very straight I also had a light texture sprayed on it.

We will let it dry for a few days before we hit it all with primer.
