1968 Pontiac Firebird--Do No Harm Carplay Install.

Hello Everyone. I recently installed a new Alpine head unit in my 1968 Firebird.

I am trying to maintain the retro feel of the car and still have every tech advantage 2020 has to offer.

So the approach I took was If it fits without any metal fabrication or custom panel then its was fair game.

I love the results let me know what you think!

      Rusty.

Looks like you got it to work without cutting up your car.

Yeah that looks the goods, I also plan to run an apply carplay headhunt and KTA-450 for the speakers, it's a genius design. You've just done a great job enjoying your ride more and preserving resale at the same time.

I would say yes, as I have a set in my ‘72 GTO. Those gauges are identical!

On the radio, not sure anyone makes a true 1-DIN CarPlay / Android Auto unit. I know Porsche does for their older vehicles - PCCM.

I like the setup shown! As long as it doesn’t interfere w/your hvac controls - all good!! 🤟🏼

Yes, Dakota HDX very nice and convenient to drive around town.

It’s crazy how much accurate gauges give added confidence to driving around!

is the screen the lowest it can go? i have been tossing around using that same head unit but i was worried that it will block the air controls.

Yes, The screen is as low as it goes. getting to the controls is no problem. If I was going to do it again. i would go with the Kenwood version because it has a Knob !

It looks like the Kenwood ones take a double din mount, unless I'm looking at the wrong ones (DMX and DNR series). That seems like it would be quite a bit more work to make fit in our first gen dash.

if it's not too much trouble, do you have any pictures from the side to give a bit better idea how your Alpine screen sits in relation to the HVAC controls?

      thanks,
