Rings on your fingers and Bells on your toes

Well, not so much the bells, but I see a disturbing number of pictures of folks working on their cars with rings on their fingers. This is not a good idea and if you want to know why, simply look up "finger degloving" on your favorite browser, then slide over to images. I'm not posting pictures directly because they're pretty gruesome. And don't think it can't happen to you - the folks starring in the pictures didn't think it would happen to them. It only takes an instant to become a statistic.

Around running machinery, I agree with you. My dad taught printing in HS and did not allow any jewelry around any of the presses. A watch could be warn if it had one of those bands that expands like a spring to slip off.

But, on an engine that is not running, I don’t see there as being any danger from wearing a ring. There is nothing there to rip the ring off.

I hear you, I am in aviation (flight crew and mechanic). The safety aspect was driven into my mind at 18 years old (military) and now almost 50. It cringes me to see people wearing rings working on cars. Between either getting shocked or snagged and loosing skin/finger I want no part of that.

Oooh I didn't think about the shock aspect. Leaning over with a wrench in your left fist, not noticing that you're leaning over the battery, one end of the wrench laying on the negative terminal, and as you lean over reaching with your right hand, your ring gets closer and closer to the positive terminal...

I'm guilty of this & it has got me before. Using a pair of test leads, I accidentally shorted them to my wedding ring... Gold is a good conductor & get hot very quickly.
Lets just say the skin under a ring you wear all the time is pretty sensitive & even more so when its burnt & blistered.

Worst case, put a piece of tape over it if you cannot easily remove it.

Also if you must wear one, a tungsten ring is pretty strong & will not bend, but will still break if you hit it hard enough.... much better than having a ring crushed on your finger & trying to remove it with wire cutters.

Luckily, my wife is cool with me just wearing my ring when we go out on the town or vacation. So it’s sits in the gun safe with a couple of fancy watches I rarely wear anymore.
And you get that weird tan line if you wear it too much.

I'm pretty funny about my wedding band, or at least I'm funny about making sure I'm wearing one. A few years ago I picked up one of those silicone rings for around $20. Since then my gold band only comes out of the safe for special occasions. Which is usually just to make sure it still fits!
Dude are you made of leprechauns? Cause that was awesome!

I got married in 76 and wore my ring for a couple of years until it got hung up one day when I was un-tarping a grain trailer and I nearly lost my finger. I have not worn any ring for over 40 years. My wife is cool about it since she knows why and knows I work on machines all the time.

my Father in Law had a Carpet Store. He was climbing over the Rolls of Carpet, he Slipped, grabbed the Metal rafter and tore his finger off. They didn't find it for a couple of weeks so he was 9 finger Tom!

on my honeymoon, I caught my ring on a piece of metal and broke my finger. It swelled up and they had to cut my ring off. I never wore one again and my wife ( now Ex) was OK with it. I didn't want to be 9 Finger TC!

Another issue with a metal ring, accidentally shorting it out. A wedding band can go from body temperature to hot enough to destroy the flesh right down to the bone in a second or so.
