      Getting an alternator anodized black

Hopefully, this is the right forum for this.....

I have a custom billet alternator that I need anodized black, as black as possible. I have reached out to what was supposed to be the top place in LA and also Fresno but both have no interest in doing it. They just ghosted my requests. It's this alternator in natural finish: https://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?item=551 I expect the place that does it to do the dis-assembly and re-assembly and Quality Power can assist over the phone should they have questions. I don't need the pulley anodized.

Who in the hell in the country right now is willing to do anodizing of a billet alternator for me? Please point me in the right direction of where to go to!

      Thanks!

      Alex

When I lived in Wisconsin I used Greenbay Anodizing for many parts. They are a small shop and seem to be willing to do small jobs.

I wouldn't expect the place to take it apart and reassemble it when complete, especially if it's not their field of expertise. I'd take it apart myself and just send the parts to be anodized and then put it back together myself, or just send it all back to Quality Power to reassemble.

That might be turning shops off from doing the job.

Perhaps you are right. I'm not sure how to take it apart tho.

I guess my first step is reaching out to Quality Power for direction. I would have to end up with an expensive shipping cluster fu*k with it going to QP, then to an anodizer, then back to QP, then back to me.

Or buy a bare case from QP to be anodized and swap the parts over.

      Or Ceracoat it.

Cerakote I don't think is a good option in this car because that would mess with the thermal conductivity of the aluminum. Ceramic is a good isolator, not dissipator generally.

Now a bare case from QP is an idea. I like that option. Thanks!

So I reached out to QP today about an empty case and it turns out they offer this service! Only $80 for the anodizing plus $50 labor and return shipping. I wish they had offered this as a finish option on their site when I bought it a year ago, but I'm just glad they do it now.

Beware that anodizing creates an aluminum oxide coating that is an excellent electrical insulator. Anything that requires a ground pathway should have the appropriate sections masked.

They had mentioned on the phone that during re-assembly they remove the anodizing in the key places needed for it to function correctly again.

Thanks. During reinstallation, I'll make sure to be aware of this too.
