      Advanced review mirror?

I do a LOT of driving in my car and plan on doing things like Power Tour and Drag Week, etc. Since I want to keep my interior looking close to stock, I decided the best way I can get Sat Nav would be to use an LCD rearview mirror.

It would be nice if it had Sat Nav, BT for syncing a phone (so a build-in mic too), and of course, set up for a rear camera.

What are the top brand and models that people are using?

      Thanks!

GENTEX makes several types. We’ve used them in a few builds, worked out great. Customers have used them with home link too.

I was thinking about this one (or whatever supplants it by the time I'll be ordering in the fall). I already have android auto in my head unit, but I like the idea of an easy pop in pop out memory card and the three cameras. A lot of similar things just fit over your original mirror, but this replaces it, which is preferable I think. Interior camera with car guard or whatever mode is nice since I have a convertible and people are stupid.

Well, I needed something. Ticks all the boxes BUT comes with a more modern windshield style mount. I ordered this one:

      https://www.ebay.com/itm/184283571517

Not sure if I want to remove the factory mount leaving just the hard rubber mount for the sun visors then glue a piece of metal to my windshield for it to mount to.

The alternative would be to get creative and come up with an adapter to use an old-style 1969 mount to attach a more modern mirror. It seems to have a fairly standard square 4 screw mount in the center that I may be able to adapt somehow to the stock mounting arm. I'll just have to see. Maybe in a couple of years, these will mature into some more premium offerings for the automotive aftermarket like restomods and will come with a variety of mounts. Something with a more modern version of Android, etc. would be a huge plus too along with more RAM and ROM so it's snappier.

Sure would be great if I could find a shop to 3D scan it and CNC me a 2-piece billet surround (windowed in the back for camera and cooling) for it that will attach directly to the factory style mount. Anodize that black and I'd be really happy. Sadly no places in my city that do that, would have to deal with someone in LA.

Another consideration is that I have a 3D printed overhead console for an 8 button pad that's on a 45-degree angle so I need to make sure this mirror is clear of that and not being blocked, but I'm sure it will be.

That actually looks pretty nice! Wonder if they make one for the iPhone?

They are platform agnostic far as what you should be able to connect via wifi, BT, or screencast.

Unless you are looking for Apple CarPlay, in which case I haven't seen any of those, nor Android Auto for that matter.

How did this work out? The link is dead for the mirror you used. I'm looking for something that is a conventional mirror normally but switches to LCD for backup camera. Not sure if something like that exists.

I have one like that in my 96 Porsche. Half of it turns into an LCD for a backup camera, plus it has garage door buttons along the bottom and a sensor for temperature. Unfortunately, it was in the car when I bought it and haven't been able to figure out the brand/model yet. But very basic ones like that are out there.

Far as my Android mirror experiment, I've booted it up and played with it but haven't installed it yet. Other things have just taken priority.

Thanks for the reply. I know how priorities go. What Android mirror are you using? The link above is dead.

I think this or something like it is what we have in our 2021 Tahoe. It is a conventional mirror until you flip a switch on the bottom, then it switches to rear camera. I much prefer a conventional mirror during normal driving but I'd like a full display LCD for a backup camera.

Wow, that has a lot more features than it sounded like you were looking for.

Here is a snapshot of what I show in my eBay history for the one I got, it's just a generic Chinese thing:

Honestly all I want are a conventional dimming mirror and a backup camera display. I think I found something that will do the trick:

Thanks for the info on what you picked up. I always find cool stuff in your threads - one of these days I hope to meet you around Bakersfield or the track!

If that's all you need, you might want to check out these Akaso units. More functionality (for what you are looking for) at a fraction of the price, and the reviews have been pretty solid over the years. I'm thinking about picking up one to replace the ebay Gentec one I got a few years back, which has a short and is draining my battery.

Those appear to be full time LCD. Do you know of one that has a conventional mirror?
