Mirror gaskets .. gotta be something better

There has got to be a better option for the mirror gasket. I'm putting 2nd gen mirrors on a 1st gen and they seem to actually fit better without the gasket. But also, the gaskets I have are hard as rocks.. should they be more pliable? Is there something better?

Most mirror gaskets that I've seen are what I'd call a medium stiffness plastic or a hard rubber.

One option here would be to masking tape area under & around mirror mounting , possibly also wax over tape, & apply a black urethane sealant such as windshield urethane under mirror & lightly bolt in place & let dry before removing & untapping. Basically make your own gasket.

Thats a pretty good idea. I haven't ordered it yet, but Amazon sells 12" X 24" X 1/16" thick black vinyl sheets for around $20. Could easily make a pattern and cut it with a good pair of scissors. And yes... no gasket is very close to level. I also wonder if taking a 32nd off on one side would work. LOL... don't want to ruin them so I'm afraid to try that! Maybe double 1/16" on one side would work.

Sure , you could probably sand some off the vinyl or double up part of it. You could sand down the mirror housing base also, as long as it gets a little primer, preferably epoxy, to keep it from corroding. Ole fashioned hand files are pretty controllable for such a use.

I sanded mine on my 70 Chevelle and never had an issue. I made my own gaskets from .020” plastic.

Tighten it till it strips & back it off a quarter turn.
