Spun bearing on LS7 with wet sump conversion

      Hey all,

Looks like I spun a bearing on my LS7. I am thinking of buying a new motor, probably an LS3 crate, and was looking for options. Is there anywhere I should be looking as the prices on gmperformance.com are pretty crazy. I do want a brand new motor so I am not looking for rebuilds. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

p.s. also looking to have the LS7 rebuilt by someone local to Bay Area in Cali.

if the block isn’t damaged, I personally would give Texas Speed a call. They could surely set you up to bring it back to life. A 440ci LS would blow the doors off a crate LS3

What do you think happened? Sucked the pan dry? Aeration? Lost pressure do to O-ring failure?

Unfortunately I don't know, we are going to take the motor out and take a quick peak. I have never worked on an engine so not really sure what to look for.

what was the scenario? Shortly after the wet sump conversion? Driving at high rpms? Normal driving? Notice any loss of oil pressure?

I would say yeah, shortly after conversion as the motor only has @500 miles on it =). At the time I noticed something went wrong, it was at high rpm's (I came of the light pretty hard and went through gears pretty quickly (gotta have fun right). I noticed there was a loss of oil pressure shortly after, and it stayed low all the way home.

Sure it’s a bearing and you didn’t take out a lifter?

I would have been scared ton drive it home if i saw low pressure after a hard run.

The O-ring on the pick-up tube is notorious for being pinched or torn causing low OP. High RPMS can also suck a pan dry too. I agree, it might not be a bearing...

Turns out it was what we thought it was! Spun bearings on 5&6 and all of the bearings and crank have some amount of scuffing.

Now onto the hard part, looking for a solid builder as well as a new motor! Thinking LSX as I don't want to mess around with another LS7 at this point, but not sure. Decisions....decisions...decisions....

If you have suggestions please feel free to throw them out there. I am looking for a LS series motor, could be LS3 supercharged, LSX, all I want is that the new motor has to be something more sexy than an LS7.

Oh man that stinks. Was it a bare bones LS7 converted to wet sump?

I have read good things about HPR (Horsepower Research) and Texas Speed on other forums I participate in.

You wouldn’t have happen to install a oil cooler adapter did you?

I'll second that suggestion to call HPR (Horsepower Research). I know those guys personally and worked for one of them a decade ago. They work with people/shops all over the country and know their stuff. Erik will build anything you can dream of if it is physically possible.

Not sure telling him Sean sent you will mean much these days since we haven't really talked much in a while. You're welcome to mention it nonetheless.
