1972 Pontiac Firebird - Track Inspired Build

1972 Pontiac Firebird - Track Inspired Build

Glad to be back in build mode with another Gen 2 Firebird!

I plan to take it up a few notches from my last Gen 2 build see: (https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/...in-Turbo-Build) (http://egarage.com/car-profiles/1970-pontiac-firebird/) (https://www.motortrend.com/features/...tiac-firebird/)

I'm teaming up with the original crew of Kris Horton (www.carsbykris.com) for design and All Speed Customs (www.allspeedcustoms.com) to make a track-dominating 1972 Firebird Formula. Here's the final design and build sheet below.

Looking forward to feedback and ideas as we progress!

Wow based on your last build this should be fantastic! Do you still have the first car? Good luck with the build and have fun!

Thanks. The first car was sold to a buyer overseas back in 2012 and I've wanted to build another one since.

      Storage unit find

The car was originally a Formula with a 350 cu in. small block, two barrel carb and automatic transmission. A southern car that made its way to the east coast and was a running vehicle until the prior owner started to modify. Due to COVID and other life events, the project was started and the owner started to strip the car and some body modifications were roughed in but was quickly put on hold and never started again. It sat in storage for over six years in Michigan. I purchased the car in August of this year and started the tear down process.

Very cool, render is badass and nice starting point. My only thought is maybe matching the grill inserts/tail lights with the shape of the hood scoop openings.

Thanks and I'll think through that more as we get further along. Here's a couple shots of the passenger side and rear rendering.

Looks like a good start! Was the previous metal work there and you incorporated it into your vision and rendering? Or are you starting from scratch?

It was there. The prior owner started on it without a rendering and then stopped. I incorporated the front valance and rocker panel work into the rendering but have since stripped off the wheel flares to make them more aggressive. I'll post some further updated pics soon.

Media blasting went well. Trunk pan had a few soft spots so we decided to cut it out and replace.

Following the media blast the body has not been sealed. Trunk pan was removed and replaced and Detroit Speed Mini-Tubs were installed so we can get a large enough shoe under this thing to grip the road when we are all done. Car is back on the original frame and body modifications will start next.

Working through the updated fender flares for a 20/345 rear tire and 20/285 front tire. Once we complete we will finish the rocker skirting and plumb in the rear brake air scoop.

Wow, that's some crazy flare job, the final product looks pretty good. Are the ends gonna be contoured or end flat at the bottoms? It almost looks like they have built-in mud flaps.
