trying to start 68 firebird for 1st time after engine reinstalled

so I pulled the engine last winter. Just not got to it and put it back in. I cleaned / painted the engine bay. new intake, headers, CVF racing serp belt. new starter (due to headers) new cap rotor wires plugs. new battery.
      engine:
      455 / 468 ci actual
      Q-jet
      mild cam

      T5 trans

I went to start it and nothing. no turning over no nothing. No clicking no sounds.... but then it backfired?? what could cause that?

Im kinda perplexed nothing tries to do anything

No starter no solenoid would lead me to think to check power at the starter. Validate you've got a good ground on the block too.

yea... im wondering if I got power to starter. I turned the key a couple times and I hear a slight pop in the distributor I believe? like a faint pop ( like you make with your mouth) and the coil is warm

Timing. Check your wires. Something was happening if it backfired.

i cleaned up all my grounds and I still have nothing when I turn the key. I was trying to check with a little test light and I accidentally connected the solenoid post to the positive post on the starter (there only those 2 posts) and it bumped. could I have something mixed up here?

If it cranked when you accidentally jumped it, I would check if your trigger wire is good. Seems like the starter is not getting triggered by the ignition switch.

'it was the diode kit from power master. i took it out and viola!

double checked the wires, set the distributor again and drilled an old cap to verify the rotor was under #1 and its trying now
