what kind of gear oil to use

I'm running a 9" Strange locker. Would you recommend regular valvoline, or mobil 1 synthetic?

      What oil

If it's a new center section, break it in with regular gear oil then go with a synthetic. IMHO the best oil you can buy is AMS oil. That's what I will be using once mine is broken in.

Is there a break-in period for a rear end like there is for an engine? Change after the first 1,000 miles? Also, how much fluid goes in a rear end?

      Thanks

TTT: Anybody got an answer to Tom's question: how much fluid does a Ford 9" take?

Woah, this is old... I already filled it with regular Valvoline which is what Strange recommended. Its been so long I don't even remember how much I used... Just filled until it started to come out the axle tubes from what I recall.

      Thanks,

Buy four quarts. Fill your rear til it starts to weep out of the fill hole. Will probably hold 3 and change (plus mess makes four )

Cool ... thanks Steve. I got 2 quarts and only put one in. It's no big deal when your ride only makes power when the engine is cranking.

I've heard one can make big power by getting the engine to burn gasoline.
