      Smooting 1st gen firewall

      Hey guys and gals,
I'm putting in an aftermarket A/C system and welding/smoothing the firewall where the old heater core was. I was thinking about also smoothing the firewall/cowl seam too. My question is - can I just remove the seam sealer, fully weld the seam and then use metal filler to fill the seam. Maybe a little reinforced filler on top of that. I know lots of others have replaced the whole firewall, but I don't wanna do that major surgery. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,
      David

The upper and lower cowls are not the same height. the are 3 layers of metal at the seam. No way to get it flat without replacing the whole face unless you use an entire bucket of mud.

I know you didn't want to get this deep into it but this wall saves a lot of time.

I saw it on a build thread somewhere. It looked good. Based on a JCG design.

Thanks guys, I don't wanns do the whole firewall so I think I'll just strip the seam sealer and clean it up some. I'm fine with the seam, but if I could smooth it with a little effort I would. Thanks for the info!

I would consider smoothing the firewall for multiple reasons:
      1) you are inquiring about it and afraid to commit. It is worth the effort believe me. I get a ton of comments on my firewall. You don't want to look back and wish you did it afterwards.
      2) you will be putting a bit of effort into sealing that seam and will probably never be happy unless you end up using a 1/2 a gallon of filler

I did mine myself. Made a cardboard template, plasma cut it and welded on. Here is my thread. Look on page 2

I bought this from eBay but haven’t installed yet. They also make a radiator close out panel. I also asked them to dimple die across the top then weld in the hole.
