      Budget Build 1970 Nova

Have been a long time lurker/member finally pulling the trigger on a build. Set a budget of $30K to get the car running and driving. Picked this car up for $3,800 about three years ago and has been sitting in the garage while i was working on other projects and trying to decide what I wanted to do. Pulled the trigger on all the parts within the last month.

Parts list is as goes picked up an allegedly 17K mile L92 6.2 aluminum block 821 heads, came with VVT delete parts from Texas Speed new in the box, LS3 intake, bought a 102mm Holley Sniper throttle body for it, Holley Terminator X, Holley 12.3'" pro dash. New Tremec close ratio t56 magnum, Ram Billet steel flywheel, McLeod RST dual disc, McLeod hydraulics and pedal assembly, Speedway Motors Fabricated 9" narrowed to 56" with Currie 31 spline axles, Speedway Motors Nodular 3rd member with 3.50 gears and Powertrax Gear type posi. Holley Sniper EFI Fuel tank with 400 LPH pump. Will be using stock subframe and stitch welding the seams. ridetech complete HQ coil over system with Truturn and new Borgeson steering gearbox, Wilwood master cylinder, Wilwood Forged Superlite 6 piston 12.88"two piece rotors fronts, Wilwood Forged Superlite 4 piston 12.88" two piece rotors rears. ridetech parts and rear brakes should be here tomorrow.

Will be ordering DSE Mini Tubs, DSE smooth firewall panel, will make my own trans tunnel modifications. still need to order engine mounts, trans crossmember and mount, oil pan and headers.

For now the plan is to leave the body as is and install a new vinyl top and maybe matte clear the car for now. still undecided on wheels going to lean toward something budget friendly.

Looking forward to following your build. Don’t see a lot of Nova’s on here.

Thanks appreciate that. Been stalled for a little while because of the move and getting situated plus it’s a lot colder here in Indianapolis so I haven’t be able to get out to the garage as much as I’d like to.

Some more parts came in, for the most part just waiting on the back ordered parts, (rear suspension, front lower control arms, front brakes, Holley dash, flywheel) have a couple other projects to finish up. Hoping to start on this around the middle of February dune season always messes up project progress, have my S10 that has been waiting for the LS1 to get its bigger cam and 243 heads, Caltracs bars new front and rear springs, 4th Gen Camaro rears discs and AC lines built.

On a side note can someone explain why the Nova Detroit Speed tubs are more expensive than the F-body tubs when they come with templates to make the closeout panels and F-body comes with the panels?!

Always nice to see another Nova.
The McLeod clutch master is a nice setup. Just be sure to bench bleed it before you install it. They are impossible to bleed in the car. Ask me how I know. I would also suggest a remote speed bleeder similar to what Tick offers. Once the engine and trans is installed the factory bleeder is almost impossible to get at.
When it comes to the roof I would be tempted to keep the vinyl roof trim and paint the roof white.

So it has been a while, I have been working on the car a little here and there. Has been a busy year and a half bought a business ran it well built some equity and sold it, decided it wasn’t for me. So decided to take some time off and finish this car and spend some time with the family.

Anyway back to the car, I had everything to go twin turbo then decided I wanted to go LSA supercharged instead. I’m going to be modifying the Tanks Inc tank to accept a Holley dual fuel pump set up and bar lining the car. I go the subframe cleaned up and powder coated, engine torn down reassembled with rings gapped for boost. Purchased a Speedtech smooth firewall and trans tunnel sheet metal pieces and welded those in. Hopefully will be marrying the subframe to the body this week after I get the firewall bodyworked in. If anyone knows is there any reason to leave the blower motor hole unfilled? I will be installing Vintage Air once it comes in off back order. Also took a gamble on the CX Racing Long tubes and it looks like they will be a good choice, just wish they had a bigger primary tube option.

Did you go with the ExtReme tunnel cover (the full length trans tunnel AND driveshaft tunnel) or the T56 swap cover that just makes clearance for the transmission at the trans tunnel? I've been debating back on forth on what I am going with. I don't think I'll need the ExtReme, but I'd hate to get the car together and find that I needed the extra clearance. Your car has a killer look to it already. I'm building a 72, currently installing mini tubs. I had all of the sheet metal replaced, but always wanted to build one with patina and original paint like yours.

      Thanks!

I went with just the T56 trans cover option. Plan on running the bench seat still so hopefully this was the right choice.

I believe you can get by with it with the right shifter and shifter location, or so I've heard. I'm also thinking the extreme cover is for even lower ride heights with 1/2 height body mounts and such. There isn't a lot of info on it. Definitely let us know how it goes

Some more Update pics, went with a complete Inovators West 8 rib pulley set up and an Olson Kustom Works blower pulley idlers. Still waiting for the upper pulley, bracket and idlers. Nice part about this set up is runs one belt and lets me use the 4th Gen F-body accessories I already had with the LSA blower. Installed the firewall and T56 tunnel cover earlier this week. Will be seam sealing and body working and painting it starting today. Having issues getting my phone to cooperate with the site today, all the pic orders are off sorry about that guys. Also made some hard lines for the Aeroflow fuel rails, power levels I’m planning on making the stock rails would not keep up with.

Size: 311.3 KBWaiting for some items to show up, supercharger pulley and idler bracket set up so I can run it all off of one belt with F-Body spacing. Part of my Vintage air kit should be here tomorrow or Thursday, once I have that I can start on the dash area and get the Holley 12.3” dash mount fabbed. I’m a little all over the place right now, seems like I’m waiting on parts for everything I have touched. Picked up a top side compressor mount from Dirty Dingo today, scuffed it and painted it with Steel-It then got it installed. Tomorrow will get the radiator and fan mounted then start making some brake lines. Had to move my clutch reservoir from where I originally mounted it to gate the proportioning valve in it’s “home” not sure if I like how it mounts or the 45 degree flare when the rest of the car will be all 37 degree AN. Hoping to have this thing moving in a few weeks, Biggest hurdle is going to be the rear mini tubs. I am not a fan of body work, I’m slow at it and it’s messy I’m more of a wiring and plumbing guy. Need to contact DSE as the guy I had cut out my filler plates somehow lost the templates.

Few more pics and tires showed up so as soon as I have the rearend mocked up I can measure for the wheels and get some coming, probably just going with something inexpensive for now. Kind of blown all my wheel money on everything else.

Started on the Mini-tub install yesterday. Is just roughed in on the one side for now, trying to find the motivation to go back out there today. Having never done this job… what a pain in the ass, not hard just time consuming. Have never liked body/metal work just no way to shortcut it if you want it done right. Hoping to have the car on the ground as a roller next week. We’ll see how that goes. Still waiting on my blower pulley setup that I ordered over six weeks ago, guy refuses to even give me an eta. About to call the credit card company and dispute the charges and order from a different company. I’m a former small business owner and I get it you get behind. I really don’t want to do that, but the attitude I’m getting from the owner is slowly starting to make me not feel bad about maybe doing it.
Can’t remember the last time I saw a bumper Jack or a 14” rally wheel.
