AWD twin turbo 69 ford Cobra sports roof build.

Hey guys Wil here building a ford cobra. I'm neck deep in this build and thought id share what I have up until now. The shell was about 700 bucks. I picked it up in Missouri in 2017. Prior to this I had a 69 torino gt but I was always set on the cobra. The shell was bad enough to where the last guy that had it was going to scrap it if nobody bought it. It seemed like the perfect candidate for me to cut up.

Here is the engine that will go in it. 1970 351c. Bored 30 over with the flat top rebuild kit. Arp rod studs. Speedmaster heads that needed a lot of work just to make the pushrods fit right and not hit the walls. Id say they are only worth it if you are willing to do some of the machining by hand (Dremel is your best friend here). The valve train is all comp cams using a hydraulic flat off the shelf cam. And then topped off with the speedmaster Itbs (again lots of work). I am using a fast xfi sportsman ecu to handle the fuel injection and a stand alone computronix COP ignition system.

Here's the trans. Its a bad shot but it's a t56 out of a 04 cobra. It has the 10 spline input that I would like to upgrade down the line after the car is running and the clutch goes out. Funny story is i went to pick up a t5 just so I can get it running and driving. When i showed up it was actually a t56 and the guy still gave it to me for 300 bucks. Score! Also pictured is a ford racing flywheel and McLeod clutch

Final setting is 18 inches back and the engine moved up as high as possible to accomodate lowering the cobra. Here's the little k-member i made. It needs some bracing and guests but it will hold for now while its just sitting there.

So i have a cobra irs that i have been modifying. I oringinally tried to use the original pick up points where the leaf springs were for the cradle but i just didnt think it would hold up like that.it also gave my coil overs a bad angle, not allowing full articulation of the suspension. Here is the original way I had it.

Added some braces and then completely welded it. It looks a bit crude where the the bell crank pickup points are so i think I'll tig weld in some sheetmetal around it.

I like this build. I'm not a Ford fan, but like this body style. I like the approach.

Glad to see a Torino on here! Look forwards to seeing more.

And dude, I'm seriously jealous of the $300 T56. Why can't I find one of those? lol

Nice! Last decent Cobra IRS I saw on CL was $1100, really wanted it but couldn't swing it at the time. Was the engine $300 with the speedmaster parts on it? If so that's a steal. I'm always searching and I never find these good deals. Or I do and they are 3+ hours away and I can't get to them before they are gone.

My family has two 69 Torinos, a formal roof and a Talladega. The Dega is getting restored, then the formal roof is getting new suspension under it. Not as involved as you've done out back, but we plan to chop out the shock towers one way or another. The FR also had a Cleveland in it, built pretty stout but still stock 4V head castings. I'd love to drop a set of AFRs on it.

No, it was basically a stock motor that i picked up and threw a rebuild kit on it. The speedmaster parts I purchased myself. They just need alot of work. Here is the itbs that needed alot of hours put into it. Since im going twin turbo i needed to build a plenum to add the map sensor and iac valve and i have to run speed density instead of alpha-N. I'm currently working on the top plenum right now. Aluminum is definitely hard to work with but it all turned out better than i expected.Name: 20190701_023456~3.jpg

Since its going to be turbo charged I had to build some headers. They took about 3 weeks to build. It didnt help any that I hadnt tig welded since I graduated college but they will hold up just fine. They hug the valve covers really close si I have to modify the covers so the top of them can slide off without completely taking them off. Thats for another day.
