You can definitely use it in those older units as well. We even use it in the TKO and T5 transmissions as well. It has worked well for all of them.

I don't have a lot of experience with the T56, but this is in line with my theory on why some people see so much difference going from one fluid to another. The combination of the synchro design with the large rotating mass of the Magnum really exaggerates the "feel" you get when shifting into some of the gears. Combine that with different shifting styles, and it's really not surprising that a change in the fluid properties affects the shift feel noticeably from one person to the next.

Maybe we complicate this discussion with 3rd party opinions. TREMEC provides a spec, I simply matched that spec to the fluid I use. TREMEC reccomends “Dexron III ATF”. Only the TKOs do they reccommend synchromesh. Royal Purple Synchromax meets DEX III specs.

Putting gear oil in a T56 is not something I would do....

Agreed. Just got mine this week, think I'll go with what Craig suggests. Royal Purple for me!

Just to add more fuel to the fire, I was over a friend's house helping him get his car back together and I see he purchased this for his Magnum...

What does the fluid mimic? Gear oil or ATF? Just marketing oil IMHO for the distributor and Tremec to cash in on another product that’s likely made by valvoline etc. my RP synchromax has served me well for the last 5 or so years.

My buddy said that the guy on the phone said that is the number one question they get over everything else. "What fluid do I run in it?" So they came up with their own. I'm sure it's made by someone, Castrol, Mobil 1, who knows. There was no info on the containers or the box they came in. I bet they just wanted to make some money off of all us that just don't know what to run in our Magnums. I guess if you run their stuff, you'll have absolutely no warranty issues!

I plan on using the Tremec oil that comes with my T56 Magnum when I install it. But after 500 miles, I may go with the Redline D4: https://www.redlineoil.com/d4-atf

I'm thinking about buying one of those oil testing kits and sending off a fresh sample of the Tremec fluid and the Redline to compare them.

That’s just money down the tubes. RP synchromax, Tremec fluid, redline...im confident you don’t see a difference. The T56 and the Magnum have been around for a while...long before Tremec has their own fluid and we have been beating on these transmissions.

I'm not sure what you are saying here. Are you saying it's a waste to change the oil at 500 miles? Because I'm being instructed to do that by the vendor.

Or do you think the Redline costs a lot more than just refilling it with the Tremec fluid, because they are about the same.

To spend money on oil analysis. To prove what we already know...any properly spec’d fluid will work in the magnum.

Ah, gotcha. Not like it's a lot of $$ and I'm honestly curious what is in Tremec's fluid as it's new and no one seems to know who the OEM is. Dave@Redline did tell me yesterday it's closer to a 75W85 type oil like the Gen V Viper T56 trans uses than just an ATF Dex III like they have recommended in the past.

I'm particularly looking forward to seeing how the Tremec fluid shifts in the winter compared to the Redline as well. Should be mid-December when I hit 500 miles on the new trans and need to do the fluid change.

Will it tell you make up? I thought they only gave metal break downs.

I'm thinking people are overthinking this topic. Read the above quote and use accordingly.
