67 Camaro total loss. Opinions/advice needed

To get this started I realize now that I should’ve gotten an insurance policy through Grundy or Hagerty, and I will once all this is dealt with. Now to give you an idea of the car in question, which is a 67 base camaro badged as a SS with a cowl hood and front chin spoiler. Clean White paint with clean all stock light blue interior. The upgrades include, Holley super efi sitting on top of a forged 355 with aluminum heads and a solid roller cam which sits in front of a t56 magnum and a McLeod twin disc clutch and Currie 9” with a trac-loc and 3.89 gears. The suspension is 100% hotchkis with the hotchkis valved fox shocks with cpp add spindles with c6 corvette front brakes with a hydroboost power brake setup from cpp and all brand new steering parts with a new 2-1/2 turn ltl power steering box. All that and then 18”2010 zr1 wheels with nitro nt05’s The paint and all the upgrades except for the long block we’re completed less that 1,000 miles ago.

So I hit a deer back in July which resulted in just under $23,000 worth of damage. The estimator and my body/paint guy go back and forth for about 3 weeks on the estimate of the damage for only the body and paint work. The mechanical portion of the damages were written up by a separate shop at a later time because I was up in Redding working at the time. By the time I got back from Redding it’d been almost 4 weeks from the time the accident occurred and no work on my car had been approved to be completed. Apparently when the estimator looked at the estimate the body shop wrote he mentioned right away it would be a total loss because “I mean, how much is that car worth? 5 grand?” Once i got back from Redding I supplied him with receipts totaling in the neighborhood of 50-60. At that time he was still beating the body shop up on their estimate saying they were only going to pay $83/hr labor and wrote his estimate for the paint and body at 12,500 (the body shops portion was almost 18,000) Without sending his estimate to me like he said he was going to that day the insurance company deposits 12,000 into my account. So I call back a few different times and then send over the mechanical estimate for just under 5,000. Never get a call back, 2 more weeks go by and I’m busy with work so I finally get ahold of the estimator who says he never received the estimate for the mechanical, he asks me how much it is, I tell him. So then he tells me it’s gonna end up being a total because he gave the receipts I gave him to his valuation company, Mitchell. They came back with a valuation of 23,395 plus 1,035 for my aftermarket parts plus 1,771.18 for tax bringing the total to 26,201.18. At this time I’m dumbfounded by the valuation this company has given my car but I formally sent over the estimate for the mechanical portion of work to which the estimator responded the following Tuesday saying the total estimate came to just over 15,000 but the salvage value was 10,000 which pushed the car to be a total loss. (So the real cost would still be almost 23,000 to fix) Anyway, so it gets moved onto the total loss specialist who contacted me today and sent me the report from Mitchell on how they valued my car. I pretty much laughed when I saw the value they gave to the upgrades the car has.

At first I was thinking, ok I’ll take all my parts off the car and let it go back take the 25k and start over on a new car. But then I see the upgrades listed which would mean I couldn’t take the parts off unless I paid them 10k for the car which would then have a salvage title. Not totally worth it. So I’m getting my own estimate and I’m going to fight the valuation they gave me. Does anyone have an appraiser they have used before that has experience with these cars? Any help or advise would be appreciated.

I truly dislike insurance companies. I am really sorry to hear about your situation but I am happy the accident wasn't worse. It is not like you want to make money from the situation, you just want the car fixed. Having a stated value policy is very important on these cars. Without one you are in a world of hurt. I guess I don't need to tell you that though.

I am running into problems with my car and State Farm right now. I will soon be changing to a different carrier as soon as I get a second estimate back.

The dollar value in your receipts are meaningless to an insurance company. The only thing they help prove are the items installed on your car. You need to find comparable sales transactions to your car to prove the Actual Cash Value (aka market value) is higher than they are estimating. Yes you should fight the insurance company on ACV. It won't be easy and you will need to be persistent.

I know this post is old but I recently had an insurance company try to low ball me on a claim. I had a lawyer write a letter, one letter, and they changed their tune. Bent right over and wrote me a check.
      Best $500 I ever spent.

Yeah I also realized this is old, but it reminds me of the stolen cars from the Power Tour that's all over facebook. These cars need the appropriate insurance that deals with classic cars. When you wreck your Ford Escort, the body shop "fixes it" which means they either pound the dents out and slather body filler on it, blend paint onto the car. If its bad enough, they buy a cheap reproduction panel and then blend in paint. That's not a $18K tab...thats a cheap fix it job that's not a ton of money. Your average insurance company is not going to source and OEM panel and repaint the whole car.

Classic car insurance with agreed value is the only way to go for these cars. Or else you deal with these issues...There are people right now complaining about low payoffs because they didn't insure the car properly. I don't blame them...You can't buy a $5K car....buy insurance for a said $5K car, put $100K into it and expect the insurance company to pay out to replace said $100K car when you have been paying premiums for a $5K car.

I'm curious how this turned out. I agree with some of the others here. You need insurance that's made for classic cars. There are several. I have Hagerty (have had for years) I've only heard good things about them..

OP hasn't been online since 9/23/18. I'd too like to know how this turned out. Hope he made out ok.

I have Hagerty myself for the last 18 years and thankfully never had to submit a claim!

I have American collectors on a 69 Chevelle the only claim I’ve ever had was the car was in the garage attached to the house during a house fire. They paid to have car took apart and cleaned and every thing damaged repaired no questions asked or squabble over price.
