Part of the outside frame rail has to be cut away to create clearance for the springs.

Suspension can be assembled now. Everything bolts to the crossmember.

With the mounts tacked in and engine supported by jack, I tested header and hood clearance.

I found a great deal on a chrome ididit steering column on eBay. Brand new, still in packaging. The seller changed his mind on the chrome and went with a painted column. He priced the chrome column to sell and I was the lucky guy to see it first. I don't have any decent pictures of it. It was installed just long enough to get my steering linkage worked out and then packaged back up and stored.

I also picked up a new LeCarra steering wheel.

Steering linkage complete with ridiculously long set screws. I'll cut them down when I reinstall later.

I have no history on this car. It was never titled in Alabama and any previous registration has long since been purged from AL records. I have only a few clues about its past. The back window has a large sticker that says "Miller Racing". I know that it once had a roll cage installed, probably in the same era as the Miller Racing sticker. The front window has a parking decal from a Scottsboro, AL Goodyear plant which was built in 1969 and was sold in 1991. When I was digging out a giant bondo patch in the door, I found something interesting...read on

The patch was made by stuffing the hole with newspaper and covering it with body filler.

Does that say Huntsville Times? I carefully peeled away rotting layers of paper hoping to find a date. It would be interesting to know when the patch was made.

No luck on dates but this little fragment proved to be very useful. It's obviously an obituary but there isn't much to go on. I was able to do some geneology research to determine the obit was for a lady that died in 2000. This tells me that sometime around 2000, a previous owner was at least attempting to make the car roadworthy.

That's unusual! I thought filling holes with newspaper was limited to sheetrock repairs. I've seen that on repairs in the 60's but I haven't run across that in decades.

A rust spot...so fill it with something that absorbs water and then bondo over it? Brilliant! Amazing what some people think of. They might as well have stuffed a sponge in there (kids watching Sponge Bob, hence the idea. :-) )
