I'm guessing whatever was in the ink sticks to something on the glass.
Explains why the card was the 8 of spades too.

I think the idea was that the card "appears" to pass through the glass, how would applying something sticky to it help accomplish that?

david blane does a trick like that, do a search and see some of the tricks he does it's amazing. he does one where it "appears" he levitates.

'Sticky stuff aint going to make it stick to the OUTSIDE (under water no less) of the glass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Blane trick(??) where he levitates (SIC??) is freaky.........
