collector sizing . . . on shorty headers?
Has anyone studied the effect of large-ish (like 3") collectors on (4-into-1) shortys? Shortys often get a 2.5" collector even for big-block motors. That has always seemed strange to me. The same people/companies will declare the necessity of a big collector on a fullsize header.
I get the downside of big exhaust tubes in general. At low RPM the gases have too much room to stall out inside the tube.
But wouldn't the collector on a shorty header be a case where the radical loss of space is more harmful? The shorty's collectors are being forced to compact hotter(bigger) gases than a longer header's collector. And any collector should suffer less from stalling gases than a primary tube because the gases come in more evenly.
