64 Chevelle SS LS3 swap Accuair E level

      First time post....

I have been a lurker here on this site for a while now just waiting till the day I had something worth posting. I think now is a good time

I spent a while looking for something to buy that was either close to finished or already done but what I was looking for seemed to be in short supply in the condition I wanted. I spent a couple weeks going back and fourth looking at 64 to 65 Chevelles on just about every site I could find and I found myself pretty much looking at one in particular. After going back and fourth with the broker that had the car advertised I finally pulled the trigger and bought this freshly restored 64 SS.

Now I have had the car for a few months and have already dug deep into making it the car I wanted. First thing we did was to add the accuair E level kit which I couldn't be happier with! it gives the car a mean stance when parked and adds a nice ride for cruising.

After driving the car for a couple months it was pretty clear that I was going to have to swap the engine and trans out and go with something more modern and with better drivability. I knew a LS swap was right for the car and with all of these companies making swap parts it was a easy call to make.

I made a call to my sale rep for LKQ dismantlers and was able to land this very fresh and crazy low mileage ls3 out of a 15 ss Camaro with the Tremec 6060 6 speed trans.

After breaking the engine down to the basics I installed the GM 525hp camshaft.

Most of the bolt on parts I used for this swap came from MR muscle rods and I cant say enough good things about them! Great company and killer customer service.

And thanks to Zach at drive junky for this awesome drive kit!!

Thank you! And yes I'm really looking forward to this setup over the old drivetrain.

Hello everyone I wanted to bring my thread back up and update the progress I have made on this car. Last time I posted I was waiting on a set of custom made billet specialties wheels that turned out to be nothing but a major disappointment. After over 3k in wheels and completely bummed with the way they built the rear wheels I decide to reach out to hotrodsbyboyd for another set and was assured this time they would be right. They where!

Great looking Chevelle, I have the same swap recipe in mind for my '66. Could you detail any mods you had to make to the TR6060 to make it work in your car? Thanks!

The only thing aside from the modification of the tunnel to fit the trans that was difficult was the locating of the shifter and the decision of what shifter to use. I looked at a few different shifter setups for the 6060 but in the end I used the factory 2015 camaro ss shifter. Using the stock 2015 camaro shifter worked well as it was within a inch of where my factory auto shifter was located and with a little work I could have retained my stock console. The parts I used to connect everything was a custom driveshaft from the driveshaftshop and a custom rear trans crossmember from Gforce and some Russel AN line and fittings and a Earls oil cooler mounted up front for the trans. Hope that helps.

Interesting that you were able to use the stock shifter, I would have thought it would be positioned too far rearward. I would really like to see a photo of the interior and how that shifter sits in there. This info gives me hope of an easier install, I have been researching converting the tailpiece and output shaft to T-56 pieces, more money and a PITA. Assuming your custom driveshaft uses the same Camaro mounting up front? Thanks for any info, it's all helpful!

Originally I thought the same thing and without even trying I purchased and shifter that mounted directly on top. I set the trans in place before welding up the tunnel and very quickly realized it was going to be to far forward for me. At this point I finally tried the stock shifter and was surprised that it landed in just the right spot. So with the decision to use the stock 2015 camaro shifter I made a call and bought a cut out section of the tunnel in the 15 camaro so that I could use the factory shifter boot and mounting hole. When I fitted it I knew that it would have to be removable to access the shifter mounts so that servicing the clutch in the future wouldn't be a problem. Here are a couple pics of what I ended up doing.

Corey, thanks for the pics and the explanation! This gives me a couple more ideas on how to fit this transmission into my project. Very creative with the tunnel extension. Now I have to ask about your driveline angle...!
