over lap on exhaust pipe connection ?

I'm having my headers coated and I need to figure how far from the end of the collector to stop the coating. There is only about 1/2" of room from the floor to the top of the collector so I doubt I coud get room for a V Band with clamp, so I'm going to use a slip joint and band clamp.
I had even thought of elongating the holes in the header flange in the back to try to drop the back of the header a little just to get some extra clearance. So my question is how much do I need to leave un coated so I can get a good seal from slipping the pipe over the collector? Which will have to stay un coated.

Wayne, look into the Torca couplers. They feature an inter-locking inner sleeve to prevent leaks and will allow you to coat your collectors completely. You can find them on the Holley website if you need more information.

On bus exhaust we set them up butted together, then we used stainless band clamps and silicone to seal them up. Reason for silicone was fools working for inspection teams of state troopers, if they see water dripping they think its "leaking" yet they have yet to actually read the inspection rules word for word.

Don't worry about the coating. If the outer pipe won't fit take it to a muffler shop and have them expand it a bit. I have never had an issue slip fitting pipe over coated collectors though.

I agree with Mark, no need to stop the ceramic short of the end of the collector. I over lap the flared exhaust pipe on the collector by about 2" then clamp it with a lap-joint band clamp (see link below). Makes a very strong low profile clamp that is well sealed and does not distort the pipes which means that they are easy to take back apart as needed in the future. You can butt the pipes together with a band clamp like Lee described above but this does not make as strong a connection since there is no pipe overlap and the band clamp is not very thick material and like he said needs to be sealed with some sort of sealer.

I've had good luck butt connecing pipes using the band clamps referenced above. Before I install the clamp I use a single wrap of aluminum metal tape like used for air conditioning ducts and then install the band clamp over the taped joint. No leaks whatsoever. You can find the metal tape at any hardware.
