      And sitting roughly in place

With a dummy wheel in place. You can see now how space is limited.

Next was to build a body to sink it into the dash.

I still have a few lows from the tig welds but I'll dress that more later.

I missed taking any photos of cutting the centre opening out. I also cut a acrylic lens for it but I wanted to add something to the what the two materials met each other. So I made a little tool to tip the inner edge to add a curve that goes into the acrylic lens.

A bit of hammering and filing as well and it looks like this

Now with a lick of primer and the dash fascia and dials in place

You can see with the two assemblies next to each other how much size I've reduced it by. I think this will actually work.

Next is to get a big hole cut into the F1 dash to slide this into.

I'm sorry, I do not know why some of these photos are refusing to upload the correct way. Even after reloading them. I apologise for that.

Stellar work, buddy! I'm glad you are actually working to incorporate the gauge cluster, rather than just roughly slapping it in the dash.

Hard to beat a little old fashioned hammer forming sometimes. Results match the efforts.

      Thanks everyone. I appreciate it!

Today I managed to cut some more 70 year old steel up...it was fun! And here it is sitting in place. It's going to work, I'm stoked!

I bought myself a rivnut tool and this was its test run. I cut out some nylon blocks, drilled and then pressed in the 5mm rivnut. These will be the retainers that lock the cluster in place.

One on either side. They did the trick well. The cluster is a snug fit inside the steel shell so all these have to do is hold it in place.

This is my favorite project on this board. Great work!

Love the interior fab details. I've found this is one of the most enjoyable parts of building. Just takes patience and common sense, and your reward is felt every time you drive it.

      Thanks very much, everyone!

And I agree, Interceptor. I'm loving this part. It's very time consuming but each step is rewarding.

Speaking of time consuming, I spent far too much time on this. And it's not even done! haha
Work life is back in full swing again so am only getting an hour or two here and there. But that's how it goes.
I need to add some dash vents for the air conditioning unit but space is a bit limited. I had a few to choose from but stuck with the RS6 centre vents due to the shape and the curve being the closest to the F1 dash. One issue though is they need to clear the new wiper mechanism behind it so this needs to be taken into consideration. I decided to adapt some tube so that I can use a flexi hose to join the square shape on both parts. One side is now done. This is all just made from left over stuff that I had.

Here you can see the two new tubes pointing in the direction of the HVAC upper dash vent.

Sweet! Will you widen the "flat" area of the dash, below the left side of the vent?

      Thanks!

Do you mean as is filling the open areas? If so, I plan on leaving the original dash cluster in place. It won't work correctly but will have it light up. Just for that nostalgia look.
I've also got a new stereo that arrived yesterday to fit under the vent. I've only marked it out so far. It's just a little bigger than the existing hole so I think it'll solve that one well.

I think that filled that hole rather well. It was almost like VW designed this stereo shape for the F1!

I've started making the bracket to house the climate controls too.

Once again, sorry, I don't know why this system changes the image. I can't get it to upload the correct way.

If you're using an iPhone to take the picture put the home button (or bottom of the phone if it doesn't have one) in the 3 o'clock position when taking pictures and that will correct your issue.

No, am using a Samsung. This is the only time that I've had trouble uploading photos. But if it's a landscape/portrait issue for vBulletin, I'll try to keep any photos in landscape.
