Im excited to hear what your exhaust sounds like. I can never come to a decision with mine. I think I'm overly picky.... And then never actually do anything. I hope you come up with a plan. I've got into a couple fender benders with the mustang. Its frustrating for sure. Your car has more of a story now. Fixing the fender really is a weekend project (if the damage isn't structural), but kudos to whichever way you go with it.

Looking good on the exhaust and good call on putting in the largest case possible. I too have mufflers that require a painstakingly amount of finesse to fit.

On the Camaro the exhaust the first set of hangers was just aft of muffler, the typical hanger that attaches to the outlet tube and then upward. What we have found is that due to the excessively long distances between vertical supports (the first hanger is the headers, the second just aft of the mufflers) is that, 1) The mufflers would crack at the welded seam holding the end caps, and 2) The headers would crack at the head flange. Both are caused due to the excessive bending loads due to insufficient exhaust support. For many this type of damage may not be a problem, but for a car that gets driven hard it rears its ugly head in expensive ways.

The fix on the new exhaust system is simple and elegant and can be easily used in yours as it has the same Magnaflow X-pipe. All that was done is to extend a horizontal hangar/tongue welded to the top of the X-pipe to the transmission crossmember. The hanger is a piece of flat stock, 1-1/2" wide by 1/8" thick if memory serves. The receiver hanger is a standard off the shelf part that with just a bit of modification sandwiched nicely into the transmission mount stack. The hanger/tongue slides horizontally forward to insert, so removal is just a simple slide aft exercise. The height of tongue was set such that the aft exhaust slides right up to the header collector with just a few pounds of downward force. This fix also means not having to drill holes or weld more stuff to the floorpans.

No progress on fixing the Cougar. I've just been driving it and having fun. Funds are being diverted to my GTO update.

Thanks Donny. The damage was purely cosmetic. Other than a bit of my pride, the rest is fine.

It's been a while since I updated this thread, mostly because nothing exciting has been happening with the Cougar, until last week. I am going to post some pictures, without details. I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise...

LS Fest should be a lot more exciting this year.

      mounts

Hey Andrew, been following your build for awhile now and just caught up on your last few pages of posts.

Regarding your engine mounts, would something like these work?

      https://www.rodshop.com.au/ls-engines~142

They're from an Australian company that make the for a "XP Falcon", same as the 60-65 US falcons I believe.

I've been searching for a prefabbed pair of mounts for my 67 Mustang, and the frame to engine mount look almost identical to the Ron Morris mounts I've got for my 302.

I'm almost thinking about ordering a pair to see how they fit, and measure up for a off-the-shelf solution for all us mustang / cougar guys going forward.

Would you be able to measure up your mounts?

Ill email the company and see if they can give me the spec on theirs and then we could compare.

I've been wanting to do an LS swap for years, but the mounts have always held me back. My welding skills are absolutely not good enough to trust for engine mounts, ands its really not something that I would want to test on the open road at speed.

      Cheers mate!

I can try to measure the best as I can. You'd have to tell me exactly which dimensions you're looking for. My mounts use stock 4th gen mounts at the block, so they aren't exactly like the Australian mounts.

I guess just the overall length of the mounts. I'm thinking about how they compare in terms of height and where the engine will end up with the rod shop ones compared to yours.

I'm quite sure that they'll be fine, as the engine bays aren't too dissimilar.

The next hurdle will be which transmission will fit without too much "massaging" to use as I want to keep it auto for driving around Sydney.
