I think your snubber is an original frame mount and a different c-section that had a pinion mount.

Thanks! Looks like I got myself a Nodular 9" with a Daytona pinion support and 4.30 gears and a locking diff. Woot!

Those engine mounts look remarkable simple - and I could go for some LS power in my fairlane. Your side to side clearance looks tight, but how about fore and aft? Transmission?

There is plenty of room fore and aft. The LS engines are not any longer than SBC or SBFs. These cars also have very tall square sided transmission tunnels and TKO swaps are very common in the Mustangs without any tunnel modifications. The car is in storage now for the winter, but I have enjoyed going to visit it and discovering the neat stuff, like the rear end and rear suspension. Over the winter I will try to collect all the parts that I need so that come spring I can start wrenching on it in time for summer.

Well...I just got off the phone and pulled the trigger on a 2009 LH8. The LH8 is an aluminum block 5.3L with the good 799 heads and it does not have either the VVT or the AFM, which makes my life much easier. This engine is super clean and only has 368 miles on it. I probably paid a little too much, but you can't argue with a nearly new engine. Stay tuned for some pictures.

Great choice! The L33 in my truck (Gen III version of the LH8) still has tons of grunt at 220,000 miles.

Well...here it is. I am very pleased with what I got. This engine is exactly as advertised and I totally believe that it only has 386 miles on it. It was shipped on Wednesday and arrived at my door this afternoon. I'll get it mounted on an engine stand over the weekend and start collecting more parts.

If anyone is ever considering getting parts from a salvage yard, I can recommend Fierge Auto Parts in Quincy, IL with confidence. They were very nice to deal with.

Very cool build! Im doing a 64 falcon. And good to know about that yard. I had a local one try shafting me on a cummins diesel a month ago. Taking them to small claims now cuz they signed a receipt for a drop in ready 12 valve and well it has 6 bad valves and a cracked head. Now they say they wont honor their 45 day warranty on it.... But either way glad to see you got a good engine

Yup. The LH8s only came in Hummer H3s and Colorado pick-ups. This one was from a Colorado pick-up that was in a very bad wreck shortly after it was purchased. There is a decal on the back of one of the heads that has a VIN on it still. I can probably run it and get more info.

I'll be selling the water pump and the balancer as I have a LS2 water pump and a Corvette style balancer to go in their place. I'll also be ordering some more goodies from Holley to make this engine look like a proper hot rod engine.

Wow that's actually cheap. Whats the factory hp/tq rating on the engine?

Oh sweet, that's much less that I would have thought.
I used to work at a Chevy dealer (before the Colorado's had a V8), and would have thought that number would have been much higher.
Finding one "used" (barely) for two grand is impressive.

I have a similar project under way . I'm installing a LQ9 6 litre LS into a 68 Cougar but I've gone a different route than you have. Where as you've left all the front suspension intact I've cut it all out and install a TCI suspension kit . I've modified the firewall and have fabricated a new transmission tunnel so that I could get the engine as far back as I could without getting silly . It nice to see someone else is not afraid to go against the grain by installing a Chevy into a Ford/Mercury that's not a 32 Ford .

Nice score on the engine Andrew. Around here the yards want that kind of money for something with a 100,00 miles on it.
I'm thinking the GTO's suspension may have you a little spoiled, making it real hard to leave the Cougar's suspension alone. I guess time will tell.
It's nice to see a Cougar getting some attention. I can remember drooling over them at the dealer's down the street.

      Ken,

As much as I enjoy pro-touring cars, I also really enjoy drag racing. While the GTO was in hibernation I built a couple of second gen RX7s with an LS6. The first car was more street oriented, but the second car was really all about going straight. It had "bigs and littles" and ran pretty well.

I will be fine with the stock suspension on the Cougar. I just want to go through it and make sure nothing is loose and definitely change out the front brakes. There are numerous kits available to mount late model Mustang brakes on older Mustangs, but sadly they all require 17" wheels. I am looking at various other kits, such as from Wilwood and Baer. Both companies offer brake kits that will work with 15" wheels.

More updates on the engine shortly...
