      1965 amc rambler american 220 2dr.

here are a few photos of my 65 rambler american from when i brought it home about 4 years ago. This was an all original california daily driver that has made it home to its birth town of kenosha, wi. i have a quite a few photos of the progress of this car that i will upload when time allows. i have been working on this for the past three winters and have been successful at keeping it on the road in the summer.

      first motor swap amc 360

this is the first of motors to be put in the rambler. the motor is a amc 360 that i pulled from a very rusty 1974 amc hornet hatchback. i pulled the entire drivetrain out of the hornet to swap into the rambler. behind the motor is a torque flight 727 that i had rebuilt with heavy duty clutches upgraded planetary and a reverse manual valve body with a 2500 stall converter. all this put power to a amc 20 rear axle with a factory posi and 3.54 gears. the motor was rebuilt before i got the hornet and was parked next to someones garage for about ten years before i found it. the bottom end was built to stock specs. the heads were ported and had an edelbrock performer rpm intake and a mild crower cam. this combo was good for 350 hp and 375 ft. lbs. torque. i pulled the engine crossmember from the hornet and bolted it into the rambler like it was made for it. that is what makes amc's so awesome, the fact that so much is interchangeable between all the different models they built through the years. the only major mods i had to do was to massage the trans tunnel a little for the huge trans and some cutting and welding to the factory rambler trans crossmember the rear end also bolted right onto the ramblers stock leaf springs.

At first I thought it was going to a complete restoration which was an excellent plan. but now a V8 transplant! restomod on!! love it. will be following along.

BTW, I don't know if it's considered taboo to plug an alternative suspension supplier here but here goes. Check out Control Freaks complete IFS and rear 4 link suspension kits for ALL amc's! look a FREAK RIDE.com reall BA stuff for AMC's Fords and especially Mopars. They also make headers and really trick aluminum radiators for AMC's as well.

My Hornet is running their complete IFS and rear 4 link set up as well as the sub frame connectors. The handling is absolutely amazing now.

Hey U AMC guys, My Uncle Roland Hill passed away at 90 two years ago in Kenosha, he was the Plant Manager! He went around from the Lake Shore plant to others on 60th and the body Plant in Milwaukee. He was the dog all the way back to the 40's on up. He drove the "bath tub" Nash Ambassador when I was knee high.

      triangulated 4-link kit

here are some photos of the freak ride triangulated 4-link kit with double adjustable coilovers. i decided to order this kit immediatly after driving this car for the first time after installing the 360 and automatic trans. this car had so much axle rap with the stock leaf springs that the yoke on the rear diff came up and hit the floor. after installing this kit the handling was almost unbelievable and the ride is nothing short of amazing.Name: IMG_20120223_152840.jpg

Nice car, I've always liked the Ramblers. I didn't know how much interchangability there was from one body to the next. My F-n-L drove a J20 truck he bought new in '74. Along the way, he picked up a 360 or 390 long block as a spare rebuilder. I inherited it after he passed away, and got an AMC 727 from a buddy's brother for $20. I was just looking for the "right" body to drop it in. Ended up moving to FL before that ever happened... darn.

We need pics of the Freaks 4-link set-up, not just of the loose pieces. I've been looking at there site and considering them for my '67 Barracuda.

      4-link installed and subframe connectors

here are some photos of the 4-link installed in the car along with the subframe connectors also from freak ride. everything fit like it was meant to, just takes a lot of measuring. all of this work has been done without a hoist. Name: 100_0222[1].jpg

      tko 500

these next photos are the tremec tko 500 that i sourced from a 1989 mustang gt 5.0 that i found on craigslist. this trans has the smaller input shaft out of the tko-500 line of transmissions. this is mated to a 6.5" deep 1982 jeep cj bellhousing. the flywheel is from hayes and it is for a 1966-69 amc v-8. and it uses a clutch from 77 JEEP CJ with a v-8. the trans mounting holes on the bellhousing had to be relocated to fit the tko-500 to it. i am also running a 3/4" slave cylinder from novak adapters for a jeep bellhousing and 3/4" bore master cylinder from wilwood. i also had to modify the trans tunnel quite a bit as this trans is really tall be based on the old ford toploader. I LOVE AMCs. If they weren't so hard to find around here I would have a 71 Javelin.
