News and updates of the next So Cal Challenge event

Hello fellow Racers, hope all of you have been enjoying your summer and with the kids returning back to school its time to go racing again! The next So Cal Challenge event is Saturday August 31st at the Orange County fairgrounds in Costa Mesa Ca. The OCCA which has hosted the Great Labor Day Cruise for 31 years and counting, have invited the So Cal Challenge to bring auto-cross racing to their event. This is a great show that has been quite unique in the past as they have allowed vehicles to "cruise" the show anytime during the event rather than the vehicles to remained parked like at other events, so a driving event such as the SCC event should bring many spectators.

Historically this event recognizes pre 1978 vehicles to travel pass their gates and cruise the show. However, through negotiations with the OCCA, all model years will be allowed to compete at the So Cal Challenge. In order for us to do so, all SCC competitors must enter through gate 8 off of Arlington dr. at the fair grounds.

To make things easier, we ask that yo pre-register at www.socalchallenge.com to streamline "roll in" at gate 8, (again off of Arlington dr.). Your ticket will allow you to drive your vehicle at the SCC event, as well as walk into the show through the pedestrian entrance. If your car is pre '78, or looks like a pre '78, (I'm talking about you mister '81 Camaro,) then you can drive your vehicle through the OCCA "cruise lane" around the show. For you late model guys, your wristband will allow you to enter the show through the pedestrian entrance however, the OCCA would like the "Cruise Lane" to remain pre '78.

Please note that the cost for this event is $100.00 due to the great state of California's cost to rent the fairgrounds, but this fee also includes one admission to the Great Labor Day Cruise for Saturday August 31st, and Sunday September 1st. Also I regret to report that the great state of California will not allow us to serve our drivers food or drinks of any kind, so our apologies to all of our regular competitors that have attend our events in the past. Food and drinks will be available for purchase inside the Great Labor Day Event, which is a short walk from where the track will be set up at. If you would like to bring out your motorhome, or a tent and camp at the facility please visit their we site at www.ossa-inc.com for camping information.

Currently the So Cal Challenge annual schedule states that this is a one day event, Saturday August 31st. The OCCA has asked us to allow their show-go'ers to have an opportunity to test their skills on the track. So we have worked out a deal for us SCC competitors to race on the 31st for points, and then we can come back the next day for "fun runs" with the Great Labor Day participants. This means your $100.00 entry fee will allow you to run your car both Saturday and Sunday, plus walk or cruise the show both days as well! Electronic timing equipment will be provided courtesy of Jet Hot coatings all day Saturday, and up until lunch time on Sunday. At this event the fastest or lowest time in the class will be the winner. If you want to "call-out" someone for a race, Sunday afternoon we can set aside time to have shoot-outs if desired.

Lastly, the state of California has mandated that all drivers and passengers must wear a helmet while out on the track, and helmets will not be available for rent at this facility. Currently, SCC staff is working on a possible discount code with a highly regarded helmet and safety manufacture to help our fellow racers get the proper safety equipment. If you already own a snell 2005 rated helmet, or can borrow one, please bring it with you during "tech / check in" time for one of the SCC staff to authorize.

If you have any questions, comments, ideas, please refer to the SCC website, www.socalchallenge.com or to the So Cal Challenge forum on www.pro-touring.com. I would like to personally thank everyone for their interest in the So Cal Challenge, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Great Labor Day Event!
