      68 GTO Project

I guess I'll start on a project thread for our 68 GTO

Car was purchased in 1999 by my mother who had owned one brand new when she was 18. Well she saw by chance on the history channel Top 10 Muscle cars of all tiem and GTO was number 1 so she decided to buy another one

currently the car has a Pontiac 400 out of, we think, a 70's Bonnieville

the motor is tired and could use a good rebuild here sometime but is still fine for driving currently

4 Speed Manual (I think a muncie my brother specwarsquid will fill in the details)

      New hurst shifter

3.55 auburn posi (interesting note the car orginally had a 355 gear set from the factory according to the papers we got form the pontiac historical services but somewhere down the line someone put a economy 2.78 in it)

Axle housing is out of a chevelle since the housing we had was a canadian housing and wouldnt support the 3.55

Car is in need of body work, new paint, and some chroming, also this particular car was Verdoro Green

I already have a new hood for it which was put on for fittign but now is back off and in its box

I guess I'll start off with some before before pics

here you see the car a little after we bought it in 99 at the woodward Tigers GTO show

Car was sitting on Rally IIs on Bias PLy Tires

I'll add a few more pics and details a little bit later

why/what is that in the 3rd and 4th pictures up from the bottem? Looks like the bottem of the rad. support with some red, white and black paint and the number 4.

      Just to add some information:

The trans is a Muncie M21

The 400 is a 1972 YT motor with 46 heads.

regarding the wierd looking decal and 4 on the bottom of the rad core support. It looks to me like some previous owner used what ever scrap metal he could find to repair the damages core support.

The front end of the car suffered some sort of front end damage that extended all the way to the frame. The previous owner did his best to fix it himself. But didn't do a very good job as all the front driverside body panels slump down. Bascially they couldn't fix the frame properly so they coaxed all the sheetmetal to fitt the bent frame. didn't really noticed it too much until we tried some replacement body panels and they would fit. At it's worst the driverside sheetmetal slopes down 1 1/2 inches more than it should.

The plan this winter is to explode the front end and pull the frame out from under the car to true it up then blast, coat and rebuild the frame.

At that point will tweak the Hotchkis suspension and get the car lowered in weeds properly.

here are some pics i have:

Nice looking '68. My favorite year for the GTO. I have a red '68 GTO also. It's an original solar red car with parchment interior and 400/4-speed. It's not very original anymore.

decided to come back and update this a little though it is with older pics still but oh well

this set of pics is from when we took the GTO into the shop to have a new rear end put it

ended up having to get a donor axle from a chevelle since the new 3.55 auburn posi wouldn't fit into the old axle

also decided to get a few shot under the chassis while it was on the lift a little ugly

my mom wasn't feeling the rear being lower than the front nor was I but I didnt want to put the perches back in the way they were so We compromised I cut them from 3 inches to 2 (kept the 1 inch for later)

still kinda high but will fix it later on when I decide to swap the 2 inch perch for the 1 inch
