View Full Version : Mustang 8.8 rear with Z06 brakes

So I am using Z06 brakes on my 3 link 2011 Mustang Gt500 rear axle setup on a gm A body.

I cut out some plates and I was surprised just how nice of a setup it is.. I will map them to the rear parking brake setup(I have to trim the brake pad metal down a bit).

If anyone wants a set let me know I am going to have a few cut out, I can add a few to the list.

this changes the bolt pattern of course so you need to drill out your z06 rotors also.

Have you read up on the 8.8's used in this car? I hope you won't be making a lot of power because Mustang owners themselves complained of constant problems in low mileage vehicles. Hope it works out for you though.

i think i'd redrill the axles before i redrilled an off the shelf replacement wear item like a rotor... this would also keep the bolt patterns the same front and rear..

I have heard of rear ends in cars giving people problems... :) I think someone on the internet someone posted a rear end failure.

as for why not use GT500 rear brakes?

because they are weaker than the z06 and they run 2300$ and I would have to resell the z06 brakes I have and I have z06 brakes on the front.

but new zo6 rear brakes only run about 1000$(new calipers,rotors, pads)....

With that being said I would try to find a rotor with GM pattern and the correct offset for your application. I definitely would redrill the axle to a GM pattern to keep everything the same frt to rear

I got away from the GM pattern, its still a GM rotors/Calipers. The front hubs are GM, the rear axles are Ford so my offsets are perfect.

I didn't redrill the axle hub, I did redrill the front hubs.

I also drilled the rotors, I can buy "blanks" but I have seen many "racing" rotors drilled out for weight loss/multiple hub configurations.

You can buy a 4 wheel GT500 setup for about (15" front, 14" rear) for under $2,000. http://www.americanmuscle.com/frpp-6piston-brake-kit-0514.html

I drive and autocross, and sometimes track a '12 mustang and the stock rear brakes are quite good. They are paired with a fixed Brembo caliper in the front. I can see the advantage, aesthetically and functionally, of using the Z06 caliper in the rear to match your fronts. I do have concerns about using a fixed caliper on a c-clip rear end and the pad knock back that goes with it. Ford used a floating caliper for a reason.

If you don't plan on driving hard enough for that to be an issue, please disregard the above.

Took the wheels off the Mustang tonight. The end play that is acceptable on those axles is ridiculous. You will have problems with a fixed caliper.

that was a question but wildwood an others get away with it a lot so I don't know why I couldn't.

Yeah I may be doing something like that but that is getting pretty crazy. I would need to have the axles customized after bracketing the spindle on the rear..

I have not fully test fit the rear in the car under the body yet, ive measured 10 times an it says I have 1/2 inch clearance.... but Its a tape measure under a car body so I am making plans to shorten the axle if need be. I would probably get crazier if I had to cut the axles...

You can shim the c clips to remove the axle play. Rebuilding the trac loc good and tight can go a long way towards that as well.
