My name is Brian. New member from San Diego.
Thought I'd start a build thread on my new project, a 1970 Nova.
Still haven't 100% figured out all the details of what I want to do to the car, so let me hear your thoughts.
Previous owner worked on it for 5-6 years and got it here:
454 Big Block
Th400
12 bolt rear with 3.73 gears
Sub frame connectors
Front factory disk conversion
new fuel tank and electric pump
replc all bushings
undercarriage, firewall, and floors scraped and sprayed with Lizard skin
No interior
No dash

I'm setting a goal to get this road ready/legal by mid Aug
I think my end goal will be a mean looking sleeper/rat rod/patina pro touring machine. But I'm flexible.... I'd also like to keep this as a driving restoration.
Since Nov 2012 here's what I've been doing:
sold off the 15" rally's (with the wrong offset so they hit the fender lips)
purchased cheap rollers for garage.
Purchased cheap shocks to get settled
cleaned up some wiring
Stripped massive layers of old paint and lots and lots of bondo
Started patching some rust holes
I got a big pile of parts I've been collecting ready for install: Astro Hydroboost conversion, front spindles, some 18"s with Nitto 275 and 245's, autometer gauges for dash
I still need to decide what to do about seats for the August target date. I'm thinking of dynomat, carpet, front buckets, and 3 pt seat belts for the August goal.

Just thought I'd share a little progress.
I'm doing an Astro Van Hydro-Boost conversion. Its taken me a little while to collect all the parts...but hopefully I finally have them all now because I took it all apart.
I just found a local guy that tig welded the old push rod with a new adjustable clevis, so that should have been the final missing piece.

Just finished up the Hydroboost over the weekend.
Once I started bleeding the brakes, I started to find some interesting stuff. Pass rear = working drum. Driver rear = No fluid present during bleeding. Driver front = excellent condition and fluid present. Pass front = dry as a bone. replace caliper, still no fluid. Had to replace line from master to front passenger just to get the fluid flowing again. Now I got 4 working hydro assisted brakes. THEY WORK!
I'm getting a little pedal feedback when I brake, so I think I need to re-address how I Tee-ed the return lines into the power steering reservoir.
Now that I got all 4 brakes working, I think it might be an official "driving" project.

Well, I chickened out to head down our street (we live on a very very steep 1/4 mile hill)
here is the car on saturday after I pulled her out. Went back in the garage and noticed a new leak on the floor (tranny and rear diff leave a little drip that I haven't fixed yet). This time the leak was brake fluid leaking out of the rear wheel cylinder. I guess after reviving all these systems, things are bound to cause a little problems.

Back for a little update.
I've been chasing leaks in my Hydroboost conversion. I've had nothing but problems with the AN hoses and braided lines for the pressure lines. They keep blowing the hose out of the AN fitting. My guess is that I purchased the wrong type of AN fittings/hose for my application.
So I've converted to factory OEM hoses. After scouring RockAuto for days for pictures of hoses, I found a couple of hoses that might work. I went down the street to order at my local parts store. (not to mention the hose was only $18.99) Got the hose home, had to take a little of the bend out of the factory hard line...and it fits like a glove. The pressure hose from the booster to the pump was a little trickier, but I ended up buying two separate hoses ($18.99 + $13.99) then cut the fitting off one of the hoses and had a local welder TIG the 3/8 hard lines together. I should have everything buttoned up tonight so I'll take some photos.
Right before my final line blow out I had the car driving around in the cul-de-sac and the temp gauge started to climb towards 220+. I was in the process of converting from the mechanical fan to an electric fan. Also had to replace the two dry rotted radiator hoses. I also did a fluid flush and took out gallons of nasty rusty water. Notices some hoses missing on my water pump, etc.
So after I get the car off of jack stands for the power steering lines debacle, I will finish the install on all the cooling system maintenance.
Hopefully that maiden voyage isn't too far off now....

Just a quick update....
Here is the completed "factory" type power steering hoses.

And after putting the car up on the jack stands to tackle the leaking rear wheel cylinders, I thought it would be a good time to tackle my worst rust issue:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/11/20131112_193620_zpsd81d5cdb-1.jpg (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/bs46488/media/20131112_193620_zpsd81d5cdb.jpg.html)
As you can tell from my first cut...I'm using a patch panel for the outside qtr. I'm going to make some home made panels for the inner structure. Its not going to be pretty, but it will remove all the rust.

So I've noticed that most build threads go this way.....Well its been 2 years since I've updated.
Anyways, I've made a little progress and also back tracked a little at the same time, so I thought I'd post an update.
I was plugging away at the car for a good while.
So then whenever I would start the big block to drive it into the driveway to work on it. I'd have to listen to my wife complain for about 2-3 days about how loud the car was and how bad it smelled. Then in my other ear, I have my father (who taught me all this car stuff) saying the same thing over and over again LS motor, LS motor, LS motor. So I finally caved to both of them and figured I could buy an LS motor and solve the old car smell for my wife and also take the advice of my father.
So I decided to pull the big block and put it on an engine stand and make room for an LS in the Nova. Here is the Nova with its engine removed. You can also see my engine stand in the background (and my father). Typically engine stands are red, but mine seems to look a little primer gray with a hideous orange firewall:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/20140913_154336_zps924jujcx-1.jpg (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/bs46488/media/20140913_154336_zps924jujcx.jpg.html)
I guess at this time, its when I start another build thread!
Here is the latest on with the nova. I'm back to researching and buying more parts for the LS conversion. I'm hoping to get it back to running, stopping, and steering over the summer. (I'm also hoping to have the truck as "driving project" by then too")

My father was out visiting for a couple of days and we spent some time working on the LS swap.
We jumped knee deep into the wiring harness. Following the instructions on the web it wasn't that bad of a project.
Here is the motor/wiring cleaned up a little:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/07/20150717_210517_zpsvxzhi2hx-1.jpg (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/bs46488/media/20150717_210517_zpsvxzhi2hx.jpg.html)
Got the engine mounted and ran into an issue. The center link hits my oil pan when turning. The mounts I'm using moved the engine forward about 1.75". I bought the new Holley 302-2 pan. It has a good solid hand width behind the truck intake on the firewall. The trans mount was quickly modified to fit. I even think my driveshaft will bolt right in. So I'm more inclined to modify the center link or find a different centerlink to swap in. Any suggestions?

Although I dont have an LS swap, I'm pretty sure this is a common LS swap problem and its solved by buying one of the conversion oil pans. I'm sure someone who knows what they're talking about will chime in though.
bs46488

Quick update:
After doing a bunch of research I determined that modifying the center link was a bad idea and I should just suck it up and move the engine back.
The current ebay ls swap engine bracket I bought only has 3 holes of adjustment. (Stock SBC, .625 inches forward, and 1.675 inches forward)
Well the 1.675" is too far forward and hits my center link. And the .625" is too far back and the intake hits the firewall.
So I saved myself the $150 on the Dirty Dingo sliders and decided to drill and tap a 4th set of holes. This will move the engine back about 5/8" and give me plenty of room on both the center link and firewall. The engine mount will share the bottom left bolt of the block and the two new holes I drilled.
I'll also have to cut and modify my trans crossmember, cause that will not fit.
And incase your wondering, I'll use my newly saved $150 and invest it towards shortening the driveshaft...cause now its too long!

Mmmmm......wiring, wiring, and more wiring.
Finally got the engine location issues resolved. Had a slight header interference with the steering rag joint, so I had to move things around a little more.
Now that every thing is in place, started working on final wiring. Getting the fuse block wired up and all the wires in the car for the OBD2 port, brake signal, tach, etc
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/08/20150809_140334_zpsr4htclb0-1.jpg (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/bs46488/media/20150809_140334_zpsr4htclb0.jpg.html)
Now that I got the stand alone harness resolved, I need to clean up the birds nest of wires that the previous owner created. He relocated the battery to the trunk with just a large power cable, then its piggy backed a few times for power distribution, alt feed, etc
Subbed... its a Nova, can't help it. Look forward to seeing more :)

So Sunday was the official day to start the car. Everything is done, no leaks, fuel pump relay seems to be working correctly, I even ran exhaust on the car.
Decided to crank the engine over (pulled the fuel pump relay for a no start situation) to see what the mechanical oil pressure gauge would do and ran into 2 problems:
1) There is a nasty clunking noise when the starter cranks. Inside the car it feels bad, it sounds like a loud clunk almost like the driveshaft is hitting the floor pan (its not moving, I checked). Outside the car, it does not sound as bad. It just sounds like the starter is not meshing correctly or engaging enough, or maybe just hitting he flywheel.
2) I didn't crank a lot because of issue #1, but I didn't see any movement on the oil pressure gauge
Looking for suggestions on issue #1.
A little of the background: 2002 Silverado 5.3 with 4l60E (supposed to have 87k on it). Got the engine, trans, wire harness and ecu as a pull out. Didn't separate the engine and trans. I only removed the starter to put in the new Holley oil pan, then bolted it back in place. Used the LT1swap.com for harness modification and he flashed my ecu.
I'm running a battery in the back with 1/0 welding wire, using a ford starter solenoid in the trunk and have a little jumper wire from the battery lead to the "S" start wire on the starter. Brand new battery. Battery is grounded in the trunk to the body. Engine has 3 grounds up front from the block to the body and chassis.

Quick update.....IT'S ALIVE!
I got a little advice from people about my questions in the above post and pretty much the answers were to just start it up.
Push it out of the garage, turned the key and vroom! Oil pressure jumped to about 45psi after about 3-5 seconds. The weird clunking noise is no longer there.
I didn't have much time this weekend so I only drove it back and forth a couple of times, but when I did the trans felt really really sluggish. I haven't hooked up the tcc from the swap yet, any chance that could be contributing to the sluggish trans?

Quick update:
I finally wired the TCC switch, CEL light, and the OBD2 port. Once they were live, the CEL was on. Pulled out the code reader....only 8 codes stored! All of them trans related.
After a little research, I ended up putting 12+ to the pink wire on connector on the drivers side (I believe it is called the PRNDL switch), instead of the round plug on the passenger side, so that explains a lot. Got the power switched and now it feels like a car again!
Rumor on the street is that I have to re-do our kitchen, then all my posts will be paint and body related updates.

Have been busy with a quick kitchen remodel for the wife and spending time working on competing the C10 project I'm also working on, but started to tackle this big cancer spot over the weekend.
Didn't want to replace the entire quarter and inner wheel well, but now I need to find a way to fabricate the lower 6-8" of the inner wheel housing.

I've also been having starting issues with the battery in the back. Went to rockauto and bought the sheet metal to bring the battery back up into the engine bay to see if it fixes my starting issues.

Pulled the car out of the garage and I have some sort of driveline/rear end clunk. Not sure what the issue is. The clunk sounds like a large hammer is hitting the floor, consistent with rotation. It also almost looks like the left rear axle has a large amount of play in it, moving in and out.
The reason for pulling the car out of the garage was because I got a good deal on a HVAC unit, so I ran this flexible duct across my garage. Who couldn't use climate control while they are working!

Its been a year, so it must be time for an update.
After all that forward progress with the sheet metal and rust issues, I set myself up for a slight set back.
I ended up finding a deal on a T56 Stage 2 rebuild and started to collect parts for a 6 speed swap.
After a lot of ups and downs with the install, its finally in and back on the ground. Now its time to start prepping for paint.

I saw someone talk about San Diego people getting together, I’ll be down here this Sunday if the trucks are running or y’all just want to grab a coffee.
Where in SD are you? I’m over in La Mesa.

Awesome Nova! That LS/T56/12 Bolt drive train should be a lot fun and a solid combo with room to grow into. Are you planning to autocross it? Looks like you've made a lot of progress in the last few months. Keep up the momentum!

Here is a better pic after the paint session.
After I get it back together and get a few shake down miles on the vehicle I'm planning on updating some of the suspension for some more spirited driving.

Putting the car back together. Still have some cutting and buffing to do and need to resolve some paint color differences.

Got a call from the upholstery guy that the seats were done:

Did you paint that yourself in a temporary booth ??

Yes I did. I bought a Harbor Freight carport with one of their super coupons. It did a great job with controlling the wind, sun, and overspray. The only compliant I had was if you waited to long to paint in the day it got really hot inside the booth.
I really like those front seats.

Thanks. This has been a long project to get it back on the road. I'm excited to potentially drive it in a month or two.
The seats are from a 2000 Camaro. They were beat up (and dirt cheap) but the upholstery guy did a great job recovering. I pick up the door panels tomorrow. He'll make a custom headliner to match the whole car later this summer.

Guess I haven't updated in a little while. Slowly putting the pieces back on the car. Hopefully in a few weeks I can legally drive it down the road.
No interior pics yet. I just threw the bucket seat in so I could drive it in and out of my garage.

Another year passes by.....however shortly after my last post we broke ground on an addition on the house, so I've been doing carpentry instead of turning wrenches.
Then on New Years Day I finally stopped making excuses and officially (and legally) made the maiden voyage on the car. It was great to finally drive it and shift gears.....but I immediately started to make a list of bugs to fix. Here are the major ones:
1) The engine has multiple misfires. They all seem to be on the passenger side of the motor. I did a quick plug change and it improved but it isn't 100%
2) It needs an alignment!
3) The front end is too low and causing some tire rubbing issues on the upper fender when turning
4) Left rear wheel rubs the lip of the quarter panel
5) Cheap ebay long tubes are about 2" from the ground.
So this is what I picture as the snowball effect.....in order to fix the engine misfire I really need to put some miles on the car. Before that happens it needs an alignment. I'm not going to get it aligned without rebuilding the front end. And if I'm rebuilding the front end, I might as well fix the "too low" issue. And if I'm replacing all these parts.....I might as well stick some upgrades in there. And I'm pretty sure it wont clear the alignment rack with the exhaust so I need to address the exhaust.
And this is where the dust settled. I tried to talk myself into UCA/LCA with coilovers but just thought that was overkill for my plans (translation: I can always upgrade later)
Here is the parts list:
Full Moog front end rebuild
CPP stock height C5 hybrid spindles
C5 brake upgrade
Global West UCA
Rebuild factory lower with new Delrin bushings
Stiffer Moog factory style spring
Hellwig hollow 1 1/8" sway bar
A box full of exhaust tubing bends
Turn signal switch (because the lights don't work) and might as well put a cheap steering wheel on

Pic of the addition with the toys out of the garage. Saw dust gets everywhere!

One of the final items I thought the car needed to legally drive on the road was the dash. Plus I wanted to watch the vitals of the car while driving.

Parts are slowly starting to come together. Haven't gotten it off the jackstands to see the ride height. Maybe this weekend.
