hi everybody, im sean!

ive been lurking on this site for a couple of years now, i figured i should post my builds. i also have a dedicated track miata a friend and i are building and split everything, ill make a thread for that too eventually.

i got this truck when i was 17 as my graduation present, id always wanted a first gen s10. my dad bought it from a neighbor who was the original owner. he used it as the office truck for his concrete buisness. it was bone stock, all original and had never left the phoenix area, i got it at about 210k. i lifted it 7" and threw on some 15" soft 8s with 32x11.50 bfgs. i was more into off roading back them. i was just going to do a simple 2.8 to v8 swap. i tore the motor out and then started partying too much, college, etc and really got into dirtbikes. i lost interest for about 3 years, my dad kept it at his shop.

in 2010 the shop closed and my dad died, so it came back to my house and i decided to start to get going on it. by then i had been bit by the road race bug, so i was just going to do some simple things for handling and clean it up a bit, a budget build. before i knew it, it became a frame off resto with a roll bar and all the crap you will see. although im still on a budget, its gotten way out of hand. i just cant leave things alone. im just going to give a relatively brief overview of the last 2 years .you can see the full detailed documentation here- http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f30/86-s15-ext-cab-v8-corner-carver-56k-beware-475623/

i know its not competition legal, or even proper really, but its better than nothing in my opinion. i set it far enough back behind the seat so there shouldnt be a contact issue on the street as this is mainly a street truck. the door bars are a little low to keep the door panels and i didnt want to run bars through the back glass.

Love the S-10 / S-15 truck-rods!
Got a special place in my heart for these. My dad bought a 89 S-15 std cab - long bed new in 1989. I turned 16 then and learned how to drive in it. I always wanted him to lower it and put on some mags but it wasn't his style. My brother ended up with it years later and drove it til it died @ 230k miles. I have always wanted an extended cab first gen but never did end up with one even with several friends getting the V-8 S-10 urge. Some day after the projects I have are done...
Keep posting your build. Looks great so far!

Hello Hi I'm Sean, I'm Mark,

Awesome build! Great pics----I will be following this. Looks like you're going to be driving a basically new (and much improved) truck when you're done.

thanks mark!

has anyone ever used the qa1 FC series shocks in a handling package? or at all? theyre cheap, and user rebuildable and revalvable. i havnt checked to see if the lengths are right, but they fit midsize gms which should be the same at least for the front.

tuning kit- http://www.speedwaymotors.com/QA1-TK01-Large-Body-Tuning-Kit,1216.html
or should i just stick with the standard bilsteins?

also im not sure which front springs to run. i have 585lbs zq8 springs, my original 86 springs at 707lbs, and some others at 748lbs. i had decided i was going to run the zq8s for the drop, but i realized those with the tall lowers and 2" drop spindles would be a little to low and limit my tire size. besides that i feel 585lbs is just too light for a performance setup, and the LCA angle will be more preferable without the spring drop. anyone have any insight?

i got a little done.

the spindles are all modified, i put the heavier springs back in, new timken bearings and seals in new cut up rotors, and got it all bolted back together. i made new caliper brackets since i changed my mnid on brakes for the 3rd time. c5 rotors and ls1 calipers.

so the wheel hits the caliper :( (drag 17x8, 13" c5 caliper) i added some 4mm spacers and it just clears, but the tie rod hits the wheel really bad.
i had a 1/2x1/2 rod end lying around to test fit. a 5/8" high misalignment end is only 1/8" larger on the radius so it should clear seeing how this one has about 1/4" and the wheel is going to move out another 1/16" or so when i get proper spacers. it also has the exact right height at 0.625 from center of pivot to mounting face of the spindle which gives me about 0.100" less bump as the factory end is about 0.725".

i ordered just 1 of the heims to be sure they clear before i invest in the rest of the steering parts. it came in today and its close but its going to work! the pictures make it look closer than it is, but it has about 1/8" clearance when the gap is at its smallest. i may chuck the spindle up on the mill and mill the 5/8 hole offset in the taper, if that makes sense. that will give me another few hairs of clearance, maybe a 1/16", and should affect bump negligibly.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/08/20130823_191253_zps9d63f57a-1.jpg

and i thought i might have to relieve the backside of the spindle steering arm to clear the heim, but it worked out jut right.

hey i know you, i got a lot of ideas from your s10 (right?). anyway, i didnt, straight 5/8" grade 8 bolts, i drilled the center link and spindles out with a 5/8" drill bit. although i think speedway has tapered studs like you are talking about.

12.7:1 constant ratio as i understand. its 2.75 turns lock to lock, my stock box was 3.5

i was going to get a zq8 box but they are a variable rate, and were $160 vs $115 for this one.

97.5+ blazer. they swap right over with 1/4 spacers. the only difference is the 4x4s use a taller rotors (taller hat mote accurately) because the axles are longer. i believe these will swap to an fbody with a 10 bolt(3rd gen? dont know my fbodys well) as well.

What suburb? I was liking the build, then I saw you mention AZ. I'm out in East Gilbert. I definitely want to see where this goes, as I have an 87 S10 Blazer I'm going to re-restore (was my 1st vehicle), and do more handling stuff on. It's currently apart getting a TPI V8.

thanks reddrum!

i had to shorten the tie rods a bit. with them adjusted as short as possible, the wheels toed out a little. so i took 0.100" of each end for a total of 0.400", and it still needs another 1/4" or so off the pass side.

i was going to get all the stuff to drop the motor in, but decided against it. i bought the chinese supplied summit sport seat over a year ago and was getting nervous that they may become unavailable or change, and i didnt want 2 different seats. so i bough the passenger seat and my shifter instead.

working off the drivers side bracket to get the pasenger side dimensions all right was sooo much easier than making the bracket from scratch like i did on the drivers side. i think the pass side took 1/4 the time.

since this truck is a fagomatic, and i still wanted as much shift control as possible, i went with the quicksilver ratcheting type. i setup my 700r4 for "shift command" with the transgo shift kit. when i put it in 1, 2 or 3, it is supposed to hold the gear at any rpm until i tell it to do otherwise. unlike most "bump shift" trannies that will upshift if you hit redline, or wont downshift if you are lugging it. in D, it acts like a normal auto. hopefully this all works as advertised as i cant have it shifting while im mid corner.

its been a while. i have got a bit done in the last year, but a lot of my time has been dedicated to my miata. i plan to put more time into the truck over the summer.

i had to tear the motor back apart to balance it, because... well i forgot:hammer:

i decided to go with a bigger cam while it was apart. a 268 grind from comp. i got the long block together, and started to degree the cam when i realized the rods are just touching 3 of the lobes. you dont even notice it turning it over. i just checked visually and saw it. so i went with a small base circle and a custom grind from comp. its nice being able to chose your own lobes and timing, in deskdyno03 i was able to get 30-40 more horsies and torques without making it peaky. the power band is still wide enough for my trans ratios.

these cam changes with the larger left numbers with vortec heads required beehive springs and retainers, etc.
i went to go change the seals to the non umbrella type and someone had already done so! for the record the st-2015 seals documented in all the write ups would not have fit my heads guide bosses in any way. they are just way to small in diameter.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141012_102128_zpspvpnocx4-1.jpg

i measured lift numbers as the blue seals are a little taller than the st-2015s, and its good practice anyway
exhaust valve closed. 0.690"
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141012_100859_zpsc0au55lr-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141012_100913_zpsjf5bzmh7-1.jpg

0.573" exhaust clearance. using comp cams recommendation of +0.060" minimum retainer to seal clearance on top of the max cam lift, that allows for 0.513" of lift.

intake valve closed. 0.687"
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141012_101559_zpsu0fe7afh-1.jpg

intake valve open. 0.085"
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141012_101410_zpskvd1eadx-1.jpg

0.602", which would be 0.542" of lift.

my max lift is @ 1.52:1 is 0.486" yay.

i took a lifter apart and replaced the spring with washers to make it solid for pushrod length checking. i then used more or less washers and shims to figure out the rod length needed because i dont have an adjustable pushrod. 7.914", the closest is 7.900". the comp xe256 base circle is 1.238, i forgot what the xe268 was and i didnt write it down. the small base circle cam is 1.050".

best i could get
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141103_130636_zpsgg1cvbxi-1.jpg

this is the exhaust side with the same length as the intake side. taking a washer out and effectively making it a 7.854" rod made it just as bad on the other side(closer to the lifters), so im kinda of stuck with this pattern since rods are sold in 0.050" increments. it should move in a little since the rods are .014" shorter than what i simulated, and i can always preload the exhaust lifters another 1/8" turn or so more than the intakes.

numbers
indicator readings
@59 degrees- 0.0100
@60 degrees- 0.0105
base circle- 0.0163

IVC @ 0.0060"=59.6 degrees. should be 59. the 0.6 degrees could be error in method, timing chain, cam grinding, etc. etc., its plenty close for me.

in, kinda
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141124_143850_zpsdsihszaw-1.jpg

the motor mounts and/or headers suck. i had to modify the mounts so they wouldnt bottom out on the frame when using the lower position. i have the engine set as far to the drivers side as possible and this is my alignment. i should have just made my own.they are stealth/JTR.

pass exhaust pointing at frame
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141124_143934_zpsidui8xz4-1.jpg

i know its supposed to be offset to the pass side a little, but this is extreme. the engine is as far to the drivers side as the slots will allow.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20141124_143837_zpsn7apzegk-1.jpg

the drivers side exhaust, unsurprisingly has tons of clearance. the engine seems like it wants to be in between the high and low settings the mounts offer. the trans hits everything in the high position with a proper drive line angle, and the steering shaft hits the headers in the low position. the pass header hits the firewall/tunnel in every position. the trans cross member isnt even close in any way.

i have since purchased some tubing and plate to fab my own crossmember.

i modified the motor mounts this last weekend in an attempt to get the motor to the drivers side more and at the right height.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20150302_132244_zpsuxzxzzka-1.jpg

i was able to reuse the ears from the drivers side as the needed to be shorter. the pass side needed to be longer so i had to make some new slotted plates. the angle is 45 degrees in case anyone needed to know
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20150302_110349_zpsbyt0hnyg-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20150302_134828_zpszyr2b6vw-1.jpg

now a bell housing bolt hits the tunnel. the exhaust seems to fit "better". i need to pull the engine to make some "clearance dents", and see where its at. i think if i run v bands instead of 3 bolt flanges, everything will just clear. this is waht i get for assuming things will fit and not mocking up before paint.

Sean, this thing is going to be awesome. I have always like the S10s of this body style. I have an 82 myself that I fix up some day. I love the custom dash bezel you made and those wheels will look killer on there. If you ever want a rendering of the truck let me know i would love to design an S10! Keep up the awesome work!
