The Orginal Owner

My wife called me this afternoon to tell me that original owner of my 1968 Firebird came by the house. He works for the county and was doing some survey work when he saw it the garage. I have run the numbers and what he says about the car is true. It was an original red with a black vinyl top, so I have no doubt he is who he says he is. This car is nowhere near original, but none the less he wants me to call him so he can make an offer. I have had the car for 12 years and put countless hours into it. I have it almost the way I have wanted it since the day I bought it. It has taken two deployments and ten years. I understand an attachment to your first car, as this is my first car. Would it be wrong to ask double what it's worth since I have no desire to sell it? What would you guys do given the situation?

Just tell him you have no desire to sell but he is free to make an offer. Sometimes you would be amazed at what some people offer on a car that isn't for sale.

I get "call me" notes on my car all the time. Usually I throw them away without reading them completely but I find it amusing when someone writes, "Let me know what your asking price is.". I don't have an asking price because it wasn't ever for sale!
If you don't really want to sell it at least give him a chuckle and ask $100,000.00. I think, realistically, my car is worth $30K on the market (I have double that sunk into it). If I have to tell someone what my "asking price" is I tell them $75K.
I would take that and buy another and do some things that I would do different the second time around. That's how I justify my "asking price".

Assuming the man is ligit, just be honest with him car guy to car guy. Let him know what you have invested and what it would cost to duplicate it if you were to sell it to him.

People come over and look at my car, see all the work involved and ask how much how much if I was going to sell it (its not even done) I tell them Id be asking a price to have SOMEONE ELSE build it all over again. Im NOT going through that again anytime soon, they better come with big pockets!
