This is my 1990 454ss. I've owned it since 1995. Trying to go pro-touring direction as funds come available. It has a fresh .03 over 454. Static dropped 4/6. I have a procharger that i am planning on installing this winter and plan on going with coil overs at some point. I painted it and put in the new motor about two years ago (first vehicle to paint. Black sucks!).
Plans are to auto cross it and enjoy it with the family. My three year old little girl loves riding in it! Only been on the site for a few weeks but am over whelmed with the talent on here.

If you add the pro charger the tbi will need to be upgrade to a 4 barrel throttle body and new ecu to have good driving manners tbi dont like force air.

Could you please tell me the issues you know of. I already have the Procharger unit. Several people on the 454ss forum are running these and I asked them before purchasing and they said they had no issues. I plan on running a ported cfm tech tbi that has a o-ringed throttle shaft(which is the only issue that ATI and 454ss members mentioned was a problem- fuel leaks on the shaft). Was going to use either a Moates or Dynamic EFI unit for tuning. I am already running a Walbro 255 in tank fuel pump but the kit comes with an electric aux. pump. Also has a fuel management unit that is included in the kit.
Any input or help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first boosted engine and I'm sure I'll figure it out but if someone with more experience can guide me through before I make mistakes it would really help.

Nice. Roll pan and smoothed gate look good. The paint looks good, nice job. I went to order one of these in the fall of '89... Talked myself out of it and picked up an '89 step side, off the lot, for about 10 grand less. Did you go spindles and springs in front with a flip in the rear? Sure did change the way it handles didn't it?

Yes. Did spindles and springs with a flip. Standard static 4/6 drop. Does handle a lot better. I smoothed everything (roll pan, tail lights, handles, pockets) a few years ago and then the truck sat for awhile. Wish I hadn't now. Thanks for the compliments.

Honestly I would ditch that hole RBI set up and go with a quality tunable one from fasst or Holley or msd. Those stock Tbi set ups are junk in the performance aspect. Your trucks still an emissions vehicle though right?

The plan in the future is to go with a better fuel delivery. Right now I am planning on brakes and suspension first. The truck doesn't get traction now and the fuel seems to be getting there fine but the tbi is a pain in the ass to tune. I do have the procharger but am still undecided on whether to install it. Almost all of the pollution stuff has been removed and the motor has recently been rebuilt with mild upgrades (edelbrock tbi cam and alum heads, intake). When I rebuilt the whole truck it was mainly to do cruise ins with my three year old daughter but it is kind of boring. She would rather ride with the windows down than sit somewhere and look at it. A buddy of mine started the local scca solo stuff here and has talked me into trying some of that(I use to ride motocross and road race till my daughter was born so this kind of fits).
I've have been following your build and can't wait to see it finished.

those wheels look sick, what are they?

They are some cheap wheels I found that are intended for a Mustang ($750 for the set shipped wheelreplicas.com). I had to convert to a 5x4.5 bolt pattern and turn(actually did it on a mill on a rotary table) the center of the front rotors down to make them hub centric. The offset was good on the front but the rear needed to be spaced out about 7/8" so I just made an adapter. The wheels are 20x10 with 295/40-20 and 20x8.5 with 245/40-20.
Thanks for the compliment!
These rotors are temporary.

I know exactly what you mean. This truck is just something I mess with here and there so I didn't really want to spend a lot of money on wheels which meant custom wheels were definetly out. I could not find any off the shelf wheels that would fit correctly and were a 5x5. I really wanted the "mesh" look and these were in my price range and I didn't have to do too much modding to get them on. Good luck with your '97 and if you need any info on what I did or sourced just PM me and I would be happy to share. Also, if you decide to go this route I could help you with the machine work. Thanks for the compliment.

Heck yea. I'm leaning towards the FR500 style wheel in black with polished lip. I like that there is minimal spacer/adapters used and the offsets must be close. I'll send a pm.

Thanks Bovey. Wish I would have documented more when I was actually building this truck. I blew the motor about five years ago so since I had more time than money I pulled the whole truck apart to the frame. Lots I wish that I would have done different(including making it a "build") but overall happy with it now. Thanks again for the compliments.

Thanks buddy. I've had it for awhile and my family has enjoyed it since '95. I think you find more of the "beat to death" ones around than the "clean" ones. If I was looking for one, the 91-93 would be the ones I would look for with the 4l80e trans. I don't know if the mileage is any better but mine has a th400 and is about 8-10mpg.

A few people have been asking me about modding my rotors and the specs on them. I basically milled the center hubs to be hub centric to the ford wheels, drilled the new pattern to 5x4.5 and I also had to mill the very top lip to fit where the "center cap" would be. Also, on the back side I milled the rough casting flat so that the new studs would press in and bottom out flat. I used 1/2-20 studs that were 2" long with some ebay spline drive lugs. On the fronts I was not able to use the supplied center cap so I found some nice domed dust caps and painted them flat black to match the wheels. On the rear I just used a 1"thick adptor to go from 5x5 to 5x4.5 (not reaaly fond of spacers but it worked out). It has all worked out well so far and was very economical. The wheels are the gt500 concave wheels from wheelreplicas.com, 20x8.5 and 20x10. Hope this helps anyone looking into doing this. Sorry I'm not better at posting details. Also, a few folks have asked about my rear disc setup. It is Impala SS calipers and rotors with a bracket I made. I am not running an ebrake. I gutted my factory prop valve and it seems to be working fine. Thanks for all the compliments!

Very slow progress. Had the engine out for a cam swap and other changes and was also getting the T56 mated. Picked up my clutch and flywheel last week so hopefully will be dropping the engine/trans back in next week after I move the crossmember and cut the hole in the floor. Searched for a long time to find a column from a manual truck and the pedals. These are not easy to find. Thanks for the interest. Forgot I even had this on here! Only recent picture I have. Will try to update more often as I start making more progress.

The kiddo and I rode out to Barber Motorsports Park a few weekends ago to help a friend with some Bike adjustments and decided to take the truck. If I never do anything else with this truck but cruise around with her then I'll be OK with that. Truck has been doing good other than a few bad Wilwood masters I'm using for the clutch but have that sorted now.

Thank you!! That is really more of what our truck is used for since we got it running. Wish I could change the title from "going pro touring direction" to "Going family fun truck direction" because that is what it has become. I was actually pulling the cab off when my wife told me that we were expecting. The truck also has history with me and my Dad who passed away in 1999 at the age of 43(I'm close to that age now) so I imagine the truck will be around for awhile.

Having a child is the best experience but having one that wants to hang out with you is another level of awesome. Seeing a spark being lit and the wheels start turning is something really special and to know you are supplying knowledge is priceless. She has helped make parts for Top fuel bikes, WERA A Superbike champions, Sema builds, Gold medalist Quad Rugby teams and even Dad's old, loud, black truck! Needless to say I'm a very proud Dad!
