So there I was fat, dumb, and happy last fall when a friend of mine (Joe) with a 99 Z28 called me and told me that the car hadn't started in a year and he wanted it gone so he could move on to a newer Z06. I had it towed home and to our surprise it turned out to be a corroded battery cable. Since he had already parted with the car mentally he turned down my offer to take it back for the sale price. Continuing on in this fat, dumb, and happy life I mentioned to another friend (Brad) that what I really wanted was a classic to drop in the drivetrain from the 99. As it so happened he knew a guy who had a 68 Camaro for sale that needed some TLC. I stopped by one afternoon in February to take a look. Boy did this thing need TLC! Something inside said 'Perfect!' (remember the dumb from fat and happy!) and it came home with me within days. So it has sat in my garage until last weekend when Brad, Kirk, and Paul came over to get this project going. From the time I purchased this car I have been researching builds on this site and have purchased the following to go in the car, to which I'll take pictures along the way and attempt to add insite for others.
The plan is to make the car in to a daily driver and take over the Autocross duties from the 2k WS6 that I (poorly) campaign here in KC.
Parts purchased and going in:
Speedtech motor mounts, body bushings, and trans crossmember
SW headers
PSI Conversions harness and computer
6cyl gas pedal from Firewheel Classics
Tanks Inc.....you guessd it...gas tank
Vintage Works 1968 gauges - these are a thing of beauty!
AutoKraft oil pan
I'm not shy so there will be a section detailing my expenses along this projected 3 year journey. So stay tuned and feel free to offer respectful opinion and thought.

You going to re-body the car??
Mizzouri

I need to take a few more pics and run them to a body shop or 2 and get a rough estimate for the work that will need to be done. The back half of the car is toast and the front isn't a whole lot better frankly. If it comes down to it I'll re-body it. I got the car cheap enough so it wouldn't bother me. If anyone can ballpark a number for the metal work it would be something to think about as a baseline.

What are your plans on brake? You can use the front/rear brakes from the 99 on your 68.
Good luck on your build. Nice garage. Looks like you have the space to do the work yourself.

Heck Yeah!! I'm subscribed!!
While the WS6 is at least in the right direction of what we need more of at the Kansas City Region, the 68 Camaro with a modern drivetrain is more better!!!
What are you going to do with the rest of the 99 Z28? **imagining what else is left on it that I can use**

Thanks, I had just gotten the floor epoxied prior to the car surgery. Originally I was going to source the brakes (and complete interior) from the 99 but have since decided that I wanted something better as they are my only real complaint in my WS6. Seems that people tend to favor the Wilwoods but I need to see what wheels I want to run in conjunction. I've got my friends coming back over tomorrow to help with the engine/trans install. Hope to have more pics coming by the end of the weekend.
The previous owners of the house were BIG Jayhawk fans so I HAD to prime over the huge Jayhawk on the back wall and cut out the cement reflief they had at the bottom of the deck. An old priest and young priest were brought in to confirm that the devil has been exorcised from the house as a result, lol.

Supposedly I have the car sold to a family friend. Other than the eng/trans, radiator, and seats the rest of the car is complete and the car was being driven right up to it being pulled apart. It's a zero option car that would be a really nice drag car. Which reminds me, I need to call this guy up and see if he's gonna get it this weekend or if it needs to be listed.

So what is the issue with the WS6 brakes? I'm running front/rear set out of 2002 WS6 as well. They're fine for the street but I want to take the car to the track occasionally.

I don't think they bite hard enough, and that's with Hawk HPS pads and brembo blanks. And yes, they have been flushed with new fluid a couple times over the past 4 years. If I were willing to swing some cash away from the 68 I'd be upgrading the front calipers/disks to some larger which is legal in my class (ESP). The rears are considered fine.

You know I had the same feeling too. I got on the brakes hard one time, and didn't feel they bite hard enough. Maybe some C5/C6 upgrade. My limiting factor right now is the wheels (17" Torque Thrust 2s).

Well, a slight slowdown with the rain and not having the tools to remove 2 broken manifold bolts. A trip to Sears late in the afternoon and now time to head out to the garage to get 'em out.

Well not a 'major' update to the project, more a moment of success in learning something new. Turns out those exhaust manifold bolts were going no where no matter how I tried to persuade them. So, I decided to drill them out and run a tap. Since I've never done this before I held my breath a bit and proceeded slooooowly. After work today I came home and managed to finish drilling the first one (the last 1/2" was not easy). Success! One more to go and then it's time to tackle the body bushings before dropping in the engine.

Wow! It has been hard to find time to work on the car due to life getting in the way. I did, however, manage to get the firewall hole cut for the harness and the engine dropped in on the 6th. My helper had to get back to Minnesota so we didn't have the time to lift the engine back up to get the driver's side header installed once we did the initial fit. With any luck I can get that done soon. Anyway, here are some rough pics that show the fitment of the engine using Speedtech's motor mounts and the recommended Autokraft pan.

07-13-2013, 01:08 PM
Continuing the progress today my friend Brad came over and assisted in getting the headers on. Very pleased with the fitment of the pieces from Speedtech thus far. In the first pic it appears as if the #1 tube is close to the steering box. This is an illusion caused by the angle of the shot. Nothing touches or is close to touching anywhere. Next on the list is the Speedtech trans crossmember and then sorting out the oil pressure sender since the bell shaped unit will not work with the LS1 manifold. I'm either going to get a 45 degree adapter or simply move it down near the oil filter.

Well, I had a bit of time this morning so I knocked out the trans cross member install. Again, I find myself happy with another piece of Speedtech hardware. The adjustability and overall fitment made it easy. The design looks to eliminate any interference with the exhaust system. Forgive the pic as I has to hurry up to complete some maintenance for the USDA, though it does give a pretty good indication of the clearance. I'll post up my laundry list of items to check off so I can stay organized.

After a long, boring week at work it was nice to unwind with a wrench in hand this weekend (and a couple beers!). Saturday I cut the trans tunnel back a bit allowing me to mount the shifter. It felt damn good to have a shifter in my hand again so I forged ahead and drilled a hole in the firewall for the throttle cable. Turns out the cable from the stripper 99 was a good fit, though it might need a bit of modification to go full throttle. A crappy floor replacement panel is preventing me from knowing for sure at this time. On Sunday I removed the dashpad, gauges, and factory HVAC system from the car. All that made it easier to run the PSI harness through the firewall where I did a test fit on the layout. I'm happy with the location but will mull over another spot as it's not difficult to to patch a 2" hole and I'd like to be dead set on the final location before shipping the car off. I might need to get the Vintage air unit before I go too far to the passenger side (hmm). In addition to that, I put the 99's radiator on a jack and got it up to where I can take measurements and head to the airport where a friend works and has access to a metal brake so we can fab up a few brackets. Lastly I put the power steering lines back in the factory box and realized that the SW headers are going to need wrapped to avoid heat soaking the lines. Slowly moving along but am in no real hurry. Autocrossing again next weekend might halt movement for a couple weeks.
P.S. As much as I want to hear this thing fire I can't wait to get it media blasted and metal work done (old car stink). So close but so far away....
P.S.S I was NOT the person who hacked the crap out of the shifter tunnel. Ugh, time to improve my welding skills.

Wow! Time goes by fast when life gets in the way. I recently decided on a Griffon radiator in lieu of the one from the Z28 to make the overall install a little cleaner and easier on me. This one was a no brainer with the price of $250 and free shipping from Summit, not to mention it's designed for a LS1 swap in to a first gen! Since I had a little time this afternoon I decided to head to the parts store to look for some radiator hoses. The guys at the O'reilly's south store in Blue Springs took care of me and helped me find what I needed. The lower hose is a Gates #21612 and the upper hose is a MasterPro #20820. Took a little trimming to make it work out right:

In the KC metro area. I'm right along I-70 about 15 minutes east of the stadium. Gonna run to Hot Rod Express this morning and see about the fuel injection fittings and lines. Getting closer to firing it up.
On a side note, I'm still on the fence about how to route my power steering lines but after playing around with a few different possibilities I think I've got it sorted out. If anyone has pics of how they ran theirs I'd appreciate that.

Well, with the government shutdown that's been going on for a short while I've been making good use of my time to work on the car (and watch the Cards play!) and as of 1800 IT LIVES!!!!!
I've got to trim the fans for the radiator and either make brackets or buy some to fit before I let it run for more than 20 seconds. Along with that I need make a decision about staying with the 8.2" rear or upgrading before I get my driveshaft shortened. I have to admit I am inclined to stay with the 8.2 since there is no local drag strip and after doing some digging it seems the 8.2 can handle some abuse once some parts are thrown at it to make it stronger. Someone shout out if I am seriously deluded here. At any rate, I'll get a video up here in the near future once I tidy a few things up. WOOOOHOOOOO!

Been a while since I've updated the thread and with a bit of free time today I'll add to it:
Found a guy on Craigslist selling new Goodmark RS fenders and full quarters at a price that was too good to pass up. For some reason he decided he wanted NOS, which I found odd since his is going to be a drag car. After that I took my driveshaft to Inland Truck & Parts (big midwest chain) to have it chopped. Despite having researched how to measure it and going over it with the shop I still found that it was 1/2" too long (GRRR). Well the guys at Inland shorted it a second time for no additional charge and now it sits in its proper place. While I was there I priced out the rebuild of my rear and after touring their large shop I was pretty well satisfied that their reputation around here is warranted. My friend Brad is now working on the fan shroud bracket and has the top section completed. Earlier today I ordered my air intake system from Summit. Ended up going with Spectre Performance part# 900238W, and at $219 shipped I am happy. Lastly, I got the clutch and brake pedals in and hooked up.
Next up is to bleed the brakes and stop my high pressure line from leaking. I hope to work on these this weekend. I really want to be able to drive it around the block a bit to keep the motivation high. Still no video but I've been holding off til I get the intake system and fans knocked out.

Well, it seems like forever since I updated this thread and I am happy to be back at it once more. To start with I spent the first part of last year knocking out remodelling projects for the wife. While that went well I then made a poor decision to go in with someone to rehab a house which was a no-brainer project as far as those things go. That was June and while things went south (long long story) on the project I am glad to report that the house closed yesterday and my $$$ is now back in the bank and I am ready to move forward once more.
Hearing that Ron Sutton was working with Speedtech (I have some of their parts) on a new front subframe I reached out to him and after a long conversation with Ron I dropped cash on a downpayment for one which should be out in May. Along with the new subframe we worked out a complete package front and rear which should get me where I want to be handling and braking wise. Along with that I interviewed a body shop which seems to get the late model engine/trans in earlier cars deal. Also, I've made more progress on disassembling the car and pretty much all that is left is the drivetrain, gauges, and the wiring harness. The plan is to get the car off to the bodyshop in May and by mid June things should really be shaping up nicely. With the wife fully onboard I might even be able to get it wrapped by fall!? We'll see as that is pretty optimistic with my time as I really need to be focusing on autocrossing the TA against Lance and his ever-so-pesky Monte Carlo SS.
Sorry for the no pic update though I hope to be rectifying that soon.
And lastly, while I thought I had the color choice locked down I am going round and round on Red with late year black stripe, Le Mans blue late year black stripe, or black with dual white stripes.

No, we arent going to be able to make it to Topeka but will be at the Solo School and Event in May. It was a good time for sure, I just wish we could have stayed and made it Sunday. The Camaro is on jack stands in the garage getting ready for the new 200# leafs and Koni shocks all around. Hopefully will cut down on some rear tire rub I was getting around the corners last time.

Last weekend Jeremie was able to come over and help me make another huge push in getting the car dismantled. I think the car realized I am not sending it to the crusher so it has become almost 'helpful' at this stage. In a matter of no time we got it to where all that is left is the front/rear glass and the trans crossmember. Which reminds me that I need to call Speedtech to see if it will work with the new subframe or part with another excellent piece of work from them. The price of changing to a much better direction I suppose, no loss. The headers look to be sold after 2 days on the market, so I am sure the new owner will be stoked when he sees them tomorrow. Either that or I am getting shot in the parking lot by a Craigslist killer, lol! On a more positive note my aluminum hood from AMD came in yesterday and that has been more than enough to get me stoked about taking the car to the bodyshop next week. Wooohooooo!!!! And yes, I will take final pics of the car (and post them) right before it goes out the door.
Hurry up Speedtech, I am dying to get my hands on the goods!

Got the car loaded up and over to the Restomod Store yesterday. Today I got the estimate for the work and it came in where I expected with all the rust (I think they are going to be able to save 1 of the lugnuts and toss the rest, lol). 110 hours in all and that covers everything from firewall back. They promise a ton of pics of the car along the rebuild process so I plan to share those while I do little else but rebuild the bank account for the next phase. At least I was able to shed the towing costs by trading some IT services to my real estate friend with a truck/trailer. That ought to be enough to cover the bumpers for the trip in both directions.
On a side note, the guy who bought my headers picked up my Tanks Inc tank (getting one of their minitubbed versions) the original horseshoe shifter and the 67 console that came with my car to put a couple bucks back in my pocket to cover the upcoming subframe. Here's a pic of the car before the next phase of beautifcatuion starts. Did I mention the stank in this car is horrid, glad that won't be coming back.
I need to find a thread where someone details the modification and installation of 4th Camaro seats in to a 1st gen. I threw one of the seats in before I shipped it off and it sat a bit high.

Well, things continue to move along nicely. I recently received my Ron Sutton modded JRI shocks, the Wilwood brakes, and after some deliberation (thanks Ron and Jay@Speedtech) the floater 9" is on order. Kelly, my wife, continues to be on board with me pushing hard to get this done over the next few months which has caused me to consider a move to a LS3 over the current LS1. I'd love to get the car back as a Christmas present but I see Jan/Feb being the real date as there is so much left to do. A few pics below with the car still getting the body work done. Frankly, there isn't much left of the original sheet metal but the numbers lean towards this being the cheaper route over a new body. Next up is Ron's suspension class in Texas. I am really looking forward to this as Ron is a wealth of knowledge and should allow me to get the car dialed in before next season. I will say this, if you are on the fence about attending just call Ron and pick his brain for a few minutes and it'll be clear he has a LOT to offer.

Between waiting for parts and work being quite busy I've been in a bit of a holding pattern. However, since my last post the new Speedtech subframe, 9", PSI LS3 harness, and wheels are now in (the wheels arriving minutes ago!). On Monday I'll get the Rival S tires mounted and over to the body shop for fitting. Next week should also see the ordering of the springs and sways now that Ron and I have gone over a few final details. Hoping that the car can be done by mid March so I can get some shake down time in it before the season kicks off but am concerned I could be off by 2-4 weeks. No time for pics of the subframe though I managed a quick one of the Forgeline GA3R wheels.

I wrapped up work early today so headed over to the RestoMod Store to see how things were coming along and was happily surprised to see the car being rolled in to the booth for the 2nd coat of primer. It should be in for color after the World of Wheels is over mid February. Also, I've decided on the LS3 480hp crate engine and need to call Speedtech for headers before their first batch is sold out. Tons to do before the season kicks off but progress is ramping up.

More parts have rolled in as we inch closer to completion: LS3 480hp, Ultimate headers (look like they are really going to work out), clutch assembly, alternator, PS pump, rear sway bar, and Tanks inc assembly. I sold my LS1 and PSI computer/harness to Brad. The trans is out getting a run through to be sure all is well though I am not expecting any surprises since it drove well. I'll drop all these parts off tomorrow and see if they've had a chance to start painting the car. When I stopped in early last week the last of the body work was completed and they mentioned it should be in paint the following week. I'll post pics then.
So ready for this to be complete so I can begin putting down laps. For sure it will be different than the TA but, being a V8 rear drive car with a straight axle, it shouldn't be night and day...like say, switching out to an Abarth, lol.

The trans comes back next week so the engine should be in a more permanent location soon. Did I mention, at this point, the waiting is killing me?

I'm not shy so there will be a section detailing my expenses along this projected 3 year journey. So stay tuned and feel free to offer respectful opinion and thought.
From your original post in this thread...you were just about nutz on with your 3 year journey projection.
Good luck with the finishing touches! Can't wait to wheel this thing around a course or two!!

Hey Patrick ! Cool your car is almost done.
Can't wait to see another Speedtech ExtReme clip with my setup on track. I think yours will officially be the 2nd customer car on track. Mike Cuthbertson already won with his. So with your experience, I know you'll do well too.
See you at at Las Vegas Workshop !

We have a tentative early test-n-tune mid March with the official weekend starting on April 1. Hopefully shaking down the car doesn't take long and and we'll be able to get a decent base tune on the shocks in the next few weeks. As long as this mild weather continues we're looking pretty solid I'd say.
Have no fear Ron, the ONLY reason this thing is at WoW is because I was asked. Otherwise I'd be out there right now doing the break-in procedure I have for it. This is NOT a show pony for me.....

A huge shout out to Lance Hamilton who ran heat 1 in the Camaro this past weekend at our local autocross in Kansas City. He data logged tire temps for both me and himself allowing for some tire pressure tuning this day. Now this is the 4th event for the car but owing to some recent time on the lift unbinding the front and rear suspension it might as well be its first event so dramatic were the changes. The only adjustments we made to the shocks were just prior to my last run to the low speed rebound (bleeder) 3 clicks to the stiffer side. This was to try to cure a very loose rear we'd been coping with all day. While it certainly made the rear much more solid I was not used to it and was not able to really lean on it to full effect. There are subsequent pictures that also reveal we had much more diagonal roll than we prefer so we'll be working with (Dr.) Ron Sutton soon to work out whether it is as simple as moving the rear bar from the softest setting or something else. Hopefully I can talk Lance in to coming back out in early June so we can test the upcoming changes.

and it COULD use a cupholder....
