View Full Version : ’64-67 lowered A-bodies – tire size?

I am installing a set of front and rear Eibach springs on my ’65 GTO, along with a front disc brake conversion (stock ’72 spindles), and BMR upper and lower rear control arms. Eibach says 1.3” lowering front and rear, but I have read that it will be closer to 2”.

I am currently running a 215/65/15 redline for the relatively stock look, on 15x6 rally wheels. I am thinking that the 215/65, which is 26” tall, is going to be too tall once the car is lowered, especially with respect to the front fender lips. I was considering going to a 225/60 and steel 15x7s with stock backspacing, but that only gets me .5” lower tire height and .25” more clearance. I know I can run up to a 245, but I want to keep it relatively stock, so I don’t want to go wider than 225. I also want to run the same size front and rear, and don’t want to spoil the relatively stock look with aftermarket wheels.

I don’t have a lot of time for tire fitment, so I was wondering what size tires people are running on their lowered A-bodies.

I have Eibach's on one of my Maximas and they do tend to drop the car lower than they state. I'd say put the springs in and see where you're at with the tires. With the right backspacing, you should clear the front fender lips.

Tripower - thanks for the reply. I was hoping to get some input so that I didn't have to do the trial and error thing. I'm planning on going with stock backspacing in order to save cost, minimize complication, and mostly to keep it stock-looking.

I was worried about hitting the lips as well as from some angles it looked very close. With the car on the ground though everything clears easily. I'm not sure if this helps you, but I'm running 245/40-18s (25.7" tall) up front on 18x8 rims (I believe 4.75" BS) with B-body spindles and GW springs. (I think this lowers the front between 1" to 1.5") I have the same sized rims on the back with 255/45-18 tires (27" tall). With old sagging springs and completely deflated air shocks (read: the ass end on the ground!) :) the 27" tall rears easily fit in the wheel wells.

I think you'll be OK. Hope this is of use.

Tripower - definitely a help. I should have my 15x7 steel wheels this weekend, so I can put those on and take some measurements. I am leaning towards a 225/60 redline.
