I am excited to share my new project for my 1970 Chevelle so I decided to post up here. I brought my car in last Wednesday for a custom stereo system and it should be done by the end of this week. Here are the details...

Head Unit - Sony (I don't remember which model) The only reason I used this is because I had it lying around and I am going to change it out to a Kenwood DDX7015 when I have my custom center console made.

Component Speakers - Alpine Type X 6.5" with external tweeters mounted in custom fiberglass kickpanels wrapped in black vinyl.

6"x 9" Speakers - Alpine Type R flush mouned in deck behind rear seat.

Subwoofers - Two Rockford Fosgate T1 10" in custom downfire box wrapped in black vinyl with plexiglass windows.

Amplifiers - Two Rockford Fosgate T3002 2-channel amps and one Rockford Fosgate T4004 4-Channel amp mounted in custom floor wrapped in black vinyl with plexiglass windows.

Batteries - Two Optima Red Top Batteries (Soon to be replaced with Yellow Tops) in custom battery boxes mounted in the trunk. The boxes will also be wrapped in black vinyl with plexiglass windows.

I wanted to go with something clean and simple, but still good enough for show. I think the box design will be simple and not "Fast and Furious" style. I did the plexiglass purely for show purposes and to showcase my Optima Batteries since they are one of my sponsors. I also tried to stay somewhat true to the era by wrapping everything in black vinyl instead of carpet or using fiberglass and paint. I will post pics as soon as I get it back if anybody is interested.

sounds like a pretty nice setup:smoke:. one question though...why did you go with a sony deck? personal preference? why not alpine, eclipse, or kenwood excelon? not hating on your choice, just curious. Post some pics when it's finished.

It was actually the deck out of my girlfriends car so I just used it for now since its free. Eventually I am going to be putting in a Kenwood DDX7015 or an Alpine IVA-D300, but I am holding off on that until I get my custom center console made.

I went down to the shop today to check out the progress. I must say that I am more than happy with the way it is turning out. Here are a few teaser pics...

aaah, very cool, I want to do something similiar in my 68. Question for you; how is your roll cage working with your trunk stereo work? I'm putting an 8 point rollbar in, and with the back kickers of the bar, i'm finding it to be a pain to design around.

Make sure to post finished pics!

I don't have a roll bar in my Chevelle yet. If I do get a roll bar I will have one custom made. I don't need it to be functional for rollovers, just a safe place to mount 5-point harnesses.

How much does that weigh, i want something like that in my camaro but don't want to put a **** ton of weight in it.

A.J. - I don't know how much that weighs, but probably a lot. I would suggest coming up with something that is easily removeable. The stereo system in my 350Z can be removed and put back in within 10 minutes. Maybe a sub box on each side of the trunk that you can pull out and have quick disconnects on the wires behind it.

Looks sweet... do you guys have to worry about airflow for the amps when they're mounted like that?

those amps don't ever get hot, on top of that all my air-ride stuff is behind the driver side amp. all my stuffs in a 70 chevelle SS also.

MAN OH MAN, I didn't think I was going to like the final design based on the in-construction shots, but that looks INCREDIBLE!

One question-What's it covered in? and how was it bonded to the MDF to look so clean? it looks almost machined it's so hard-edged...very cool.

SinCityChevelle

Thanks guys! The MDF is covered in black vinyl, but I don't know how it was bonded. The guy who built this is simply awesome and a super cool guy to boot. He has done 3 of my cars, 2 of my sister's, and my girlfriend's car so far and all are top notch work for the money. This Chevelle stereo is by far the best one out of the bunch though. He is making a custom center console for me soon as well out of fiberglass & MDF.

Next step is to paint the batteries to match the exterior of the car. The car is going in at the end of the year to ATS for an LS2 / T-56 swap and while the drivetrain is out, it will get re-painted, but I haven't decided on the color, thats why I haven't painted the batteries yet.
