I have been looking for a good base kit to start my build with and have found a company that builds a nice rolling chassis and body.

My real question here is would this type of car fit in with other pro-touring builds and allowed or able to run with other pro-touring builds for trackdays and autocross events.

I have always loved the look and style of the GT40's and feel if done right you could keep the classis looks, but want to give it a more up todate pro-touring look.

So what do you think is it worth taking a harder look at starting a build?

Michael I think you've done some great research and the GT40 would make a killer build. Is it a restoration/upgrade of a classic car? No...does it matter? No!

Still thinking RCR? You won't go wrong with Fran and Co

Ron are you saying not to go RCR? I have never heard a bad thing about them, they are local to me and I used to stalk their place all the time. I was really looking into getting one of their new project cars called the Apex but I am really impatient so I got a Lotus instead.

There is no doubt in my mind that a mid engined super car like a GT-40 replica could beat almost anything. They are not just fast for the late '60's, they are just plain fast. There is another guy on here that is building one, cannot remember their name off hand

Yes, if I do build one it will be one of RCR's cars. Looking at one of there basic kits, with a few extra parts, As I would be changing or modifying a lot of the other stuff that comes with the other kits.

I have had a chance to see and watch a couple of there cars, including the SLC. I would love to have a SLC down the road, but think I will go with a RCR40, for now and see what I can do.

I am going to work on a few designs and photoshop designs and see what I come up with as a direction to start a build.

I will contact Fran this next week and look into making a deposit and in line for a build. I know there is a 16 week or so lead time from talking to other builders.

Sorry man, I was typing on the iPad (fixed now). I'm a fan of RCR!

I figured so. Have never heard a bad word about them or Fran.

Got some bad news yesterday over on another forum.

Tom, there european dealer and a RCR40 builder, was in a serious accident.

http://www.gtspirit.com/2013/05/30/fatal-ford-gt-accident-happened-in-germany/

Tom made it, but is in critical condition and in a induced coma right now. His family says things are looking up.

So everyone is keeping him in our thoughts and prayers right now, along with the family of his passenger, who did not make it.

I have taken my time in working out the package, I am ordering from RCR.

Plans are to order a basic roller kit, chassis, suspension and body from Fran.

As far as plans for the drivetrain, I am going to go with a 5.0L Supercharged Coyote motor along with a 6 speed Oerlikon Graziano transmission from the Audi R8s, along with custom adaptor plate to allow for Tilton flywheel and clutch package, these transaxles are built for high HP apps.

I will get the engine and transaxle mounted by them, before being shipped.

Other wise, I am now on to planning out other parts and work on getting things together.

Go ahead, ask me about my story of having RCR mock up and make a 5.4 mod motor fit in a GT40...

I know it is not fun. Fran has said it is a tight fit. There is on with a coyote motor in AU, so it has been done.

How did it go with having Fran set it up? Would I be better off doing it myself, as I plan on making other mods myself also.

I think my plans for the car will go over better here than over on the other forum, as I do not think they like people play around with the cars to much, outside of the normal box.

I was looking into GT40s myself in the Past. Nothing wrong with RCR or many of the other companies.

If light weight is something you would rather go for, then you can not beat TORNADO GT40s.

There car in full trim weighs just under 1000kg While the lightest RCR is around 1100kg. Tornado also offer carbon fiber Monocoque chassis and Alloy if you dont want to spend the extra $ on Carbon. The full CF option will weigh in around 750kg, that is with Air-Con and in full trim. RCR to get down to 1000kg would be missing a lot of interior. Tornado also offer a complete manual step by step how to put the entire car together and have great support and offer the Coyote engine in there package if you so choose as its been designed to fit.

You can buy a turn key car with everything done or all the bits you need to put it together yourself. If you rather go a Space Frame chassis they offer that as well in Alloy. Personally if you are going to build the car I would go all out and just go the monocoque as that is what new modern exotics run and then decide if CF is financially an option otherwise go the Alloy, its gonna be one killer ride. 500HP in a 750kg car would literaly be a 9 second 1/4 mile car cause its very light... that is around 1700lbs full trim while the lightest RCR is around 2200lbs (not full trim)

I personally would Call Tornado.

I have looked into the Tornado, before, very nice car. I have seen pics of the carbon chassis, not my thing. The honeycomb is exposed in some areas and looks very unfinished to me.

Little extra weight, with these cars is not all a bad thing. The RCR car, with its aluminum mono chassis along with the billet suspension looks a lot better to me and I feel I will be able to modify and change things easier to my liking. As things come together, my plans will be more understandable, as I lay out my plan for the build and the car.

Contact Andy from Tornado if you haven't and go through those 'concerns' with him. Not everything is as it appears all the time. Even if it's just for the sake of being informed.

Hope all goes well for you. I was a Mopar or Nocar guy until I fell in love with the GT40. Then I started to appreciate FORD and now I have a 69 mustang (and no mopars)... gt40 not my 'cruise' thing but it has changed my perspective on car manufacturers. Great car and a lot of respect thats for sure.

Other than that

That is a full build progress of a TORNADO documented if you wish to flick through.

That one there is to me one of the best made RCR's. He designed the car to fit the big wheels, 17x12s with 335 wide tires etc. He also has a set of 345 wide tires that sit on 15" wheels that also fit (if you go through the entire thread). With the 17s he designed that the front tire and the back tire slightly stick out the side of the bottom corner to have that particular look it is.. the first 2 photos in that link are with the 17s.

Not bad!

Definitely good luck with everything I am sure :) for you.

Yes that was a great car, one of my reasons for wanting to build an RCR.

Toms car was great, Tom was in a major wreck with that car a little while back, if you look at post#6. Tom is doing better now, but is not out the woods.

I have spoke with Tom a few times in the past about his car and build. There is also a RCR40 being buit down in your area, by a guy with a Coyote with a build log over there.

After reading some of the replies to one build over there, I do not think my plans will go over very well on that site, but I will post there from time to time as Fran is a sponsor over there.

I have gone back and forth between the SLC and RCR40, but want a more classic body style for now. But do want an SLC in the future also.

Yes, I know both of Michael and Rebeca.
As they live near me, one of the many reasons I will be going with RCR for my build.
They have had to back off on their build for right now due to some personal issues going on right now. I am going to be talking and working with them on a few things as they can around their own things right now. As both of them have more experience working with both carbon fiber and fiberglass.
