In a pair of 7 to 0 votes by a joint session of the Spotsylvania, VA County Board of Supervisors and County Planning Commission, the proposed Dominion Raceway was unanimously approved last night. This vote clears the way for the raceway to begin construction immediately. Dominion Raceway will include a 4/10 mile paved oval, 1/8 mile drag strip and 2 mile road course. There has been overwhelming public support during the entire approval process and all indications are that this facility will be more than the sum of it's three tracks. Numerious sanctioning bodies including NHRA, NASCAR, SCCA and NASA, as well as others too numerious to mention, have spoken in support of the facility. This facility will be located adjacent to I95 at the 118 exit in Thornburg, VA. which is roughly half way between DC and Richmond making it easy to access from both the north and the south. There are still a lot of details that need to be worked out but they are planning to be ready for racing spring of 2014.

Given the loss of the RTTS in New Jersey, I think Dominon Raceway would make a great potential alternative track for an RTT* event. It could be called RTTOD (Race to the Old Dominion).

For those not familiar with Spotsylvania County, VA. it was the scene of several major battles during the American Civil War during the spring of 1863. The most famous is the Battle of Chancellorsville where Confederrate General Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded by friendly fire and later died just 6 miles up the road from the Dominion Raceway property. This area is rich in American history which means that there is a lot to see and do in addition to racing when you vist.

Hell yes a road course.!!!! 1/8 mile is kinda sad though but its what they do in VA. Besides I live across the street (6 lane highway) from Capital Raceway in MD. The old Old Dominion was a decent track that will become more houses....

Yeah Old Dominion was there for nearly 50 years but housing developements just kept creeping closer till it was no longer possible to operate the track without the whinners complaing about the noise. The new Dominion Raceway is going to be Old Dominion rebooted. It is always exciting when a new racing facility opens. I agree 1/8th mile is not the same as a 1320 strip but it can still be fun. Personally I am excited with the road course. The next few months are going to be interesting to watch the construction.

I visited the old track about 5 years ago with my car club, and was bummed out, when I heard it was closing, it was a pretty cool place. Awesome news!

Hopefully the operators of the new track will have enough foresight to purchase enough land around the tracks to keep the subdivisions and whiners at bay.

The promoter building Dominion Raceway is the same promoter that ran Old Dominion so he is acutely aware of the encrochment issues. This is one reason that the new property fronts on I-95.

Track Update:
Dominion Raceway has cleared the final hurtles and is holding it's ground breaking ceremony Sat Nov 2. Construction is already underway with the clearing of 160 acres of scrub woodland. If all goes well they may have a limted racing schedule on the oval track in 2014. But the real racing is scheduled to commence with the 2015 season. They are posting frequent updates on their FaceBook page now.

Sounds like a very cool track, and possibly another location for PT racing!

I'm always pleased to hear of New Tracks. I've seen many that were planned before the Economy Tanked & others that the Planners took the Money & Ran!

Palm Beach International (Formerly Moroso) should have stayed the way it was! There are no Garages & Facilities as planned. The New Pavement for the Road Course was Needed, but the Changes to the Course design aren't good - they have Pit-Out going right into a Chicane that now becomes a Crash-Zone.

Sometimes these Tracks are Financed by Rich Dudes that are not Racers and it shows!
