View Full Version : How many of you here actually track your completed build?

When I say track, I don't mean keep tabs on it. I mean take it out to an autocross event, or a tack day at your local race track? As I get closer to completing my build, I am going to start looking around for autocross' and the like. Just curious as to how many on here actually take their builds out and put them through the ringer?

We run our 66 Chevelle fairly hard at numerous events every year. We also consider my wife's Chevelle wagon complete and she's not afraid to thrash it too.

I plan for AutoX, but mine is far from finished. I can't imagine doing a track day unless I equipped the car with the necessary safety equipment and that would bring up a whole new list of compromises for me. I am going to have to see how low I can get the seats in mine too as a helmet may be tough due to my height. If I were to really get into track events, I would want to build a car that was more purpose built. This Firebird is going to be more of an all around car.

Got 80 laps in with my car at Heartland Park Topeka this weekend past at a NASA HPDE. It is really satisfying to take something that you've put together with your own two hands out on a track and beat on it for two straight days and have it hold together. Nothing better.
Lost a dome light, shredded the front tires and had an AC bracket \ water pump bolt back out and come loose...but other than that the car performed like a champion. Turned a lot of heads doing it too.

I'll be attending an autocross in Sacramento, CA this coming Saturday. I also live on an awesome road with no fewer than 10 twisty-turny miles in one direction (more of the same in the other), so any time I drive, I'm putting "the stuff" to work. My car is never really "done," however...

Awesome Lance, this is what it's all about. I got 50 laps in myself at Willow Springs, had to use the 2013 Mustang (they dont let the 69 Barracuda run without a roll bar) but starting a new 1967 Valiant project to be exactly what you have, my go-to durable track car.

Why??? Am I going to run into that with my 69' GTO?

Why???
Lawyers? No convertibles without roll bar seems the norm for anything out here bigger than an autocross...
I run my car at about 2 events a month between practice and group events sometimes more, for the last year and a half, tally for that 1 year 7 months, 1 motor, 1 differential, 1 set of axles, 3 transmissions, 5 sets of tires, lots of other parts, 9 magazine appearances, and the car is only getting better!!!!!

I run my car as much as I can at auto Cross and track day events, I get tired of just looking at it at car shows.

mine has seen them all but not much time on the big track. I'm hoping to have a good June/July and have it to the dragstrip, a couple auto-x events, and hopefully a day on the road course. (I usually track the vette but I have put the camaro on the big track for RTTS, I wish there were more northeast events!)

Im hoping to start next summer if time permits. Ive got to get my new frame/chassis bought installed and get some wheels/tires. If that happens ill be hitting a couple tracks next summer. Its cool to see someone like yourself that isnt afraid to track their real GTO. Guys have gasped in horror that I would even consider taking my numbers matching GTO, pull all the stock crap out, and fill it with good stuff just to auto X it.

Numbers matching cars are NO fun. I used to own a numbers matching Can Am, needless to say,I don't anymore. :)

I would never beat on my Elky like you guys. Why would anyone spend all that money and time building a car only to trash it at speed doing LSR, AutoX and track events.lol A couple of years back the head instructor for NASA-SE came up to me as I gridded for a DE3 session and said "Don't you have something not so nice to drive." I told him, this is what I built it to do. Build em right and drive em hard!

I started taking mine to road tracks, drags and LSR's back around the turn of the century.

The GTA gets beat and rebuilt on a regular basis. My car will eventually get its turn at the beatings too. Why build them if you aren't going to drive them?

A guy gridded next to me in a BMW Saturday afternoon came up to the car and said
"You know when I saw you pull in here this morning, I said to myself 'what is he doing here with that car?' After you passed me on the track for the second time, I figured it out"

My car gets driven at autocross events and track days as much as possible. At this point I think it has more track miles than street miles! It is the most fun car I have ever owned by far!

I try to make it to at least one event a month. In about a year I will do 15-20 events of some kind and put about 4-7000 street miles on it, or roughly what Carl, James and Jimi do one week out of the year.

I try to run as many autocross events as I can between SCCA and Goodguys. I wanted to do a track day since I first got my license, and last summer I finally had time to try the big track up at MAM. It was a blast, and I hope to run up there again in August once the truck is back together. Next year I would really like to try and make it to one of the pro touring events or something like the Optima event at Road America.

I autocrossed it Fri & Sat at Goodguys, I'm going to Summit Raceway (Norwalk, OH) to drag race it this weekend, and I drive it out of state all the time, does that count? My ADHD won't let me ride a lawn chair for too long without falling asleep or causing trouble. Besides, what will I do all week if the car isn't broken or dirty when I get back home? Take up knitting?
