I've seen several. It involves serious mods to the dash and lots of metal fab for it to look right. Look through readers rides on lat-g website

I've considered all kinds of options for my '68 Firebird dash. The best solution I've come up with is installing a Retrosound bluetooth radio and a non-permanent mount for an Ipad or other tablet. You would be able to play video on the screen, audio via the bluetooth, and be able to remove everything for an original look. That's my plan, anyway.

At the risk of sounding like a complete dummy, what's a DIN or double DIN?

The size (height) of the radio. Single DIN if your typical small aftermarket radio, double DIN is the same width but twice as tall.

I think it's more of the fact that people on here aren't very interested in doing that sort of mod.

DD68SS,

i've seen a lot of installs where they mount it below the dash in a custom center console. Another option is to go with a nexus 7 and root the device. this makes it more car friendly (it will enable you to use a usb dac for better sound quality as well as initiate start up and shut down based on your ignition status. Another option is a car pc which will allow various sizes of screen that may fit better then a double din unit... or even allows you to go larger

Din is 7 inches by 2
Double dine is 7 by 4

I wanted a double din and saw all of these extravagant consoles form fitted, welded, up, etc. and almost did a single din. Then I found a double din that had an angled face on it. I made custom brackets, bought a radio face plate with no cut outs, cut out the radio, and then wrapped the face plate in leather (leather isnt required ).

Now, I have vintage air controls so I was able to remove the heater sliders. if you PM your email, I can send you pics. Not sure how to post on here.

Finished pic looks great! Any more photos? Also on an unrelated note, do you have a source for the AC outlets that you used in the middle? Thanks, Scott

Here are the vents. They make billet ones, but I went cheap. I have a vintage air Y pipe splitting them.

Here are the vents. I think Southern Air makes billet ones, but I went with the cheap plastic ones from VA...which are fine. I have a vintage air Y pipe splitting them.

I actually have my console loose and the radio face plate loose as I needed to install the Viper 5904 and put the unit between the gauges and the radio, so if you need other pictures of the radio, let me know. I have the new Gen IV Vintage air box so it uses motors to open the vents so I was able to go with their 3 knob controller (you can see it below the radio mounted into the console).

If you don't mind me asking, what seats are those?

I don't mind at all. A lot of guys on this and other forums helped me, so I enjoy helping others.

2008 Corvette seats. Power and heated (all working - this was a trial and error to understand how to get working). I kep the main seat plate, but cut slots in it to allow the tracks/motor to sit low and not rub (I'm 6'4" with plenty of headroom). The front bracket was cut in half and left with the L shape - the vertical piece was left. I then welded a nut inside of the vertical face of the seat plate in the car and just ran bolts in it. For the rear, I removed the brackets and welded in a small steel bracket w/ a nut to run allen bolts through.

Single DIN with 7" downward projecting display, hay who smokes anymore anyway, just covers the ash tray and is out of the way of the shift, I've not finished the AC duct work on the console so you can still see wires inside the vents.

Exactly what I did only one section lower. I plan on putting air conditioning vents above the radio. All together it looks pretty good.

I know this thread is super old but I haven't found anything else to post this on. This place makes the console then you cover them how you want and cut the holes.
The name says truck but they also do cars.

My 69 Camaro has a double din head unit. The dash is a modified version of the DSE dash. Images can be found in the build thread link.

I am doing a double din in my 67 & mounting it in a custom console. ( Issue came up that with the deck being 6.5" deep, stereo hits the modified trans tunnel. Bought stereo #2 (without CD and it is not as deep, but still too deep to fit). Figuring out another way to get this thing mounted without it looking like a total f-up.
So just don't assume something fits, if it looks like the face of it fits.

I got these from their Instagram accounts. I think the way Sled Alley did it is the best i've seen so far with keeping close to stock design. I'm thinking that with some Restomod Air rectangle vents above it, and raise the double DIN up a little more.

I'm right in the middle of doing a double DIN install on my 67. Here's how I did it:

The hole on the lower right is for a couple of USB ports

My USB dongle came in the mail and it fit perfectly
137251
Here's the hole I cut in the dash, I then used a hammer and dolly to beat down the raised edges so that my new panel would sit flush.
137252
Use some poster board to make a template for the new panel. I used the original chrome trim for making the template. Then transferred it to 18g sheet metal. Drill the 3 holes at the top first and use this as a way to align the panel to the dash. I used a pipe that I had laying around to make the bend at the bottom of the panel.
137253
Later I cut out the center part of the trim piece leaving about 1/8" near the chrome ring that I bent downward to fill in the gap that will be left. Ignore the holes at the bottom. The original owner hacked it up a bit. I plan on building a center console that will hide the bottom of this trim piece, so I wasn't too concerned about having it perfect. I will also need to do some touch up painting as the paint chipped off a little when I was bending it.
137254
Note at the top of the panel I left a lip that will replace the plastic piece that holds on the top of the trim piece. I bent the lip out slightly so the trim will tuck behind it. Then cut the hole for the top vent. Make sure the mounting holes for the vent will line up with the original holes. Next cut an upside down "U" in the panel and bend it into the dash. I taped the radio trim ring to the panel to determine the best position to cut the hole for the radio. There are two things to consider at this point. Make sure there's enough room behind the panel for the radio to fit. If you bend the flap too far back the radio may not fit. The other thing to consider is the viewing angle. Sit in your normal driving position and make sure you will be able to see the entire screen.
137255
After cutting the radio hole I focused on mounting the Vintage Air controls and the USB ports. I was hoping there would be enough room in the flat part of the flap such that I wouldn't need to make the holes to mount these parts but as it turned out the controls wanted to sit right at the curve, so as you can see I made some cuts to install some flat pieces that I could mount the controls and USB ports too. Yea, I know my welding sucks. I never welded until I started working on this car. I'm getting better.
137256
The last thing I did was mount the cage for the radio. I brought a steel cage off of Amazon. I then installed the radio into the cage and stuck it through the panel hole to determine how far back I wanted it to sit. I wanted the black trim ring to sit just inside the hole but still protrude out slightly. Then I was able to determine how long the cage spacers needed to be. Note the 90 degree bend in the spacers where it is welded to the cage. The cage has a lip around the perimeter of one end.
137257
The lip rests on the bend that I put at the end of the spacer which made it easy to keep everything aligned.

Got the dash wired and vents plumbed. I'm pretty happy with the way the center dash turned out. Just need to paint the entire the dash, but that's a job for another day.

I just finished this one up this weekend to mate the 2002 Camaro console to the dash:

Very nice car, I was curious about your bucket seats. Where did you get them, or what type of car are they from?
