Good morning all, I have placed this question in the suspension section becasue of the mini tubbed application (rear suspension modifications, etc).
I am looking for a factory appearing gas tank for my car. I have a 1969 Firebird convertible that has been “mini tubbed” and would like a fuel tank for it that resembles a factory stamped steel one. Basically a narrowed up version of an original. Is this something available via a vendor ? or do I need to take an original and narrow accordingly and then re-tig weld the end caps back in position, paint and install. Can you offer any advice. Thank You very much.

Hello Tim,
We can narrow a stock tank in that fashion, this pic is actually a stainless stock-appearing tank that was narrowed and painted black to look stock. We use the corner material to make a baffle for the fuel pick-up tube.

The process is shown about 1/2 way through this video:

Let me know if you're interested.

Thank You Kevin for chiming in. This is just what I was envisioning. I will be installing a original Pontiac rear end, maybe an 8.5 but for the time being the original 8.2 unmodified. Will want the tank to appear factory original in that it was not painted but can paint to match the original galvanizing. Do you sell these tanks as such ? and if so can you tell give me an idea of cost for a stainless (& non-stainless if an option) factory appearing tank that has been modified for the mini tub/exhaust clearance application as seen in the video. I will also be slipping in a 2-1/2" exhaust system but undertermined yet as to what (brand) that will be...Magna Flow, Pypes, Flowmaster, etc... I like how the Flowmaster tucks into the top of the transverse muffler and exits out the bottom (ease of installation). I would sure like that whole system used in the video (fuel tank and exhaust system), well done. Thank You very much.

I just bought a new one for my '76, sectioned it, welded in some baffles, and then welded it back together. Don't do this with a used tank (boom!) paint whatever color you want.
